Ruth McClendon (D), San Antonio, has decided what kind of dog you can own is a more pressing issue for the state of Texas than well, anything. You see, she just filed HB 998, more commonly known as Breed Specific Legislation. BSL punishes entire breeds for the misdeeds of a few bad owners. Most people have no idea that the Pit Bull has served our military bravely as bomb and gas sniffing dogs, saving thousands of soldiers. The 2008 drug dog of the year in Tx was a rescued Pit Bull. The Pit Bull was commonly featured on inspirational WW2 posters and advertisements. Having owned Pit Bulls for the past 15 years, I have dealt with the misconceptions of these dogs for a long time. I have volunteered with rescues, donated money and time to rescues, and recently, my wife and I adopted two amazing PB puppies, 1 year and 6 months. Our dogs are friendly, adore children, and love other dogs, even the Lhasa Apsa's next door that bite them repeatedly (our previous PB's that passed were too!) . In spite of that, Mrs. McClendon has decided I should have to carry liability insurance for my dog, make my fences two feet higher, and rumor has it, wear muzzles when in public. This is just the beginning to an outright ban like Denver has, one that saw Animal Control and Police knock on the doors of citizen's, confiscate their dogs, and euthanize them. Over 4,000 Pit Bull's were murdered on the Colorado tax payer dime. But HB 998 doesn't apply just to Pit Bulls. Do you own a Rottie? A Dobie? An American Bulldog? Staffordshire? Boxer? Akita? Chow? German Shephard? Just about any "Working breed"? If your dog is of decent size and block headed, guess what? It's part of HB 998. If you too view this as anti-American and assinine, I implore you to please contact your congressman and your reps. I have, and I will continue to until this garbage is squashed. If it passes, well, all I can say is COME AND TAKE 'EM!!!atriot:
