How much training has this officer had? A bunch. How much MORE training would it require to keep this officers finger off the trigger? God only knows but it does reinforce DoubleActions' sentiment about the amount of time available in one CHL class not being sufficient to change an indexing habit.
No amount of training is going to fix stupid. That officer lacks the self-awareness and control to:
1. Be an officer.
2. Carry a firearm safely.
She should be fired, and probably was.
Just because there are idiots in the world does not mean we should take away the freedoms of those that aren't. It's a very slippery slope when you start down that path. You can always "rationalize" more legislation, but in the end, all you are doing is hurting those that follow the laws and aren't idiots.
How many people are killed by drunk drivers? Do you see much legislation to prohibit the sale of alcohol these days? Do you see any legislation to not allow people to drive? How about we can't drive after 2 AM (common closing time for bars in Texas)? How about we can't drive within 100' of a bar? These all sound irrational to most people, but somehow if you replace the bottle with a gun, it's magically logical.
Fact is, alot of people lack the mental maturity to respect and understand a firearm as a tool, and nothing more. They apply an emotional attachment to it because they ignorantly refuse to understand it, and they append violence to it's operation because it is loud and aggressive and because of it's Hollywood portrayal.
