Interested in people's thoughts on the AR extractor spring. Many come with a spring and an o-ring. Some folks are proponents of going with stronger springs (e.g., Wolff) and doing away with the o-ring.

    Thoughts?

The first AR I owned had fte problems. I put a BCM spring and o-ring in it and it solved that problem.
I put them in all of my AR bolts and never have fte issues.

I have used both the std. springs with the rubber core, and the O-ring (Bought o-rings from McMaster-Carr for cheap-cheap, like a hundred for $8),
and the new Colt style heavy springs (the copper plated ones)
Both work well with no issues.
Tried someone's double spring idea (inner & outer), but they worked like ca-ca...

Colt gold spring with updated insert.

The o ring and D-fender are temporary fixes for the older spring and insert for shorter barrels, but they do work. The d-fender is the better of the two, but at that point, just get the newer spring/insert

I haven't found anything that beats the HD spring, black insert, and o-ring combo yet.

One should also be polishing the front edge of the extractor, it makes everything work smoother.

All my ARs worked fine with whatever the manufacture put in them. IIRC the DPMS had the Oring/spring combo.

Appears the Colt gold spring may no longer be available. Out of stock everywhere I looked (granted, not an exhaustive search).
