I don't let it bother me. I tell my students to text me. Phone calls that I don't recognize can leave a message or else I consider it unimportant.
Especially with my ringtone. That's all well and good, but the ringing still is annoying.
Especially with my ringtone.
It has to be something I can hear, so, it's something everybody can hear.

Pretty sure it doesn't stop spoofed numbers and caller ID names. For spam calls on cell phones, I have no help. If you are talkin' landlines look here:

Bozz10 nearly has me straightened out in this thread with a Digitone Pro blocker. Gotta buy it on-line though, there isn't enough demand for a supply at Wal Mart or Best Buy.
If anyone is going to be able to develop methods to detect spoofers it'll be the carriers. I would think the first one to come out with that would get a nice boost in sales.I am not a techie, but I don't understand why it is so hard to get our devices (phones, call blockers, etc) to recognize when a call is actually coming from a number that is different than what the caller ID says and automatically block it. It seems to be easy enough tech for the spoofers to do it to us.
That's all well and good, but the ringing still is annoying.
You can set a different ring tone for numbers not in your contact list from the ones in your contact list. Set the default ringer to something quiet. Mine is a little bit of white noise.Especially with my ringtone.

You call'in me nobody? I am (heavy emphasis on the am), (slight pase) Somebody! Can't do that with my landline.
And damnit, just because nobody else keeps theirs, I should still be able to keep mine and not be bothered. Merica!
Yeah first the phone company sells you a phone, then it sells your info to spammers, then it sells you caller ID, then it sells spammers the ability to spoof numbers, then it sells you new and improved caller ID...
'murica!
You just need a smarter phone. There's some Gigaset models that will do custom ringtones based on caller ID.Can't do that with my landline.
