I remember reading about that plane when I was younger. It was thrilling to actually see it here (via YouTube).
Did you know that when it was shipped by rail before it's first flight, that it had a false propeller installed on it so it wouldn't look too out of place to any axis spies?
Reminds me of an old timer I once knew who was a mechanic for Lockheed during WWII and stumbled into the hangar where the P-80 was being prepared for flight testing. He said he kept looking for a propeller and couldn't figure out how the damn thing was supposed to get into the air. He said the idea of jet power never entered his mind.
