My Father came ashore on Normandy on D+3 or D+6. He was a Captain in the medical corps which was similar to a MASH unit in Korea. They were positioned just behind the front and when the front moved, so did their hospital.
He was there when a German Death Camp was liberated and was wounded when a German kid tossed a grenade into his Jeep. Two of the men in that Jeep were killed.
He had his faults but served our wounded soldiers well.
My Dad was there. He was in a field artillery unit and made it all the way into Germany. I believe this is before he left the states. He's on the right.
