I don't have a .300 Win Mag, but a neighbor does and it's getting harder to find reasonably priced powder. So, we decided to try some surplus IMR 7383 in lieu of IMR 4831. The data says it can be loaded at 15% less weight than the starting load for IMR 4831 and that figured to be 59.5 gr with a 175 gr SMK.

It has been raining all afternoon, so it will probably be tomorrow before they are shot and we'll see about clocking the shots.

OOPS, I guess my finger stuttered when it shouldn't have in the title. Sorry about that.

We managed a little shooting yesterday and ran these .300 Win Mags over the chronograph. It produced 2400 fps and decent accuracy at 100 yards, so with no signs of over pressure, we'll see if the accuracy holds up with more velocity.

I think I would recommend saving your money and not buying IMR 7383. The velocities I got the other day were in the 2140 fps range with a 175 gr SMK and Rem 9 1/2 primers in TW 53 brass. That was using 48.0 gr, which is into the shoulder area.

Accuracy was around 2 1/2" at 100 yards using a lead sled, so that wasn't very impressive either.

The 03-A3 will shoot Federal 150 gr around 1" or less at 100 yards, just for a reference on accuracy.

Wow. A .300 WM shooting a 175 gr bullet at a screaming 2140 fps. Into a 2 1/2" group to boot. Think you found a winner...........

Y'all playing with reduced recoil rounds?

I don't have my manuals handy. What cartridges are IMR 7383 best in? I can't even recall seeing it listed for anything.

Not even going to comment on using a leadsled for baseball speed 300 WM loads..............

It isn't too common to find data for milsurp powder, so it has to be worked up from a known reference. At $8/pound it's worth a try to make it work in something besides .50 spotter rounds, especially since I don't like $30/pound prices. The velocity I quoted (2140 fps) was for .30-06, not .300 Win Mag

I think that is more of an accuracy issue to somewhat remove the shooter from the accuracy equation and not a recoil issue.

I picked up 2 jugs of IMR 7383 the other day. I'm not sure what I'm going to use it in, but I'm pretty sure I have at least *one* firearm that can use it to some extent. It's cheap, so it's worth experimenting with. Besides, the experimenting is over half the fun. Hell, I even tried .50 BMG and 20mm powders in a 10mm handgun once. :)
