I was looking in the safe and saw my ar10 sitting back there all decked out with a bunch of heavy crap. I never shoot it. I saw a 14.5 Aero m5 upper that can be ordered with a Rugged mount pinned and welded to make it legal. Ballistics show 2500 to 2600fps from a 14.5 150gr bullet.

Would you hunt with a short ar10 or should I build a 6.5 or 6.8 for an ar15?

    Hunt it,
You'll gain nothing with the .277
and the 6.5 will just be less recoil at the distances you'll hunt with that rifle.
If you want more velocity shoot 125-130 grain bullets from the 308.

    I'd go for a 6.5 grendel over 308 in 14.5".

308 is already pretty blasty in a 16" barrel and 6.5G has a bunch of advantages over 308 in shorter barrels.

Can you list those advantages for a hunting application I may have never known about. Always eager to learn something new Please?

6.5mm will always have a better BC than 7.62mm

6.5g works very well out of shorter barrels staying closer to published MV than .308

6.5g has much less recoil than 308 (and thats not specific to short barrels)

6.5g is a AR15 compatible round, saving significant weight compared to a AR10.

The ammo itself is smaller and lighter

MV for MV, I would prefer a 6.5 bullet over a 308 for wind drift and deeper penetration on game.

I have a Saiga S308 with a 16 inch barrel and I do remember it shooting some flames.... The 14.5 would be wearing a can, but I suspect it would still flash pretty decent. I just felt a little under gunned with a 300blk setup and wanted something with some oomph behind it. The plethora of 308 piled up also had me leaning that direction.

If you have a mound of 308 ammo, there is nothing wrong with your choice, but 6.5g is significantly better than 300bo in every aspect other than sub-sonic IMO. What every you decide will probably be pretty fun

What kind of hunting? From a stand the heavy 308 upper you have means less recoil. If you are stalking then the weight makes a huge difference but you don't see that much in Texas.

How long is the current 308 barrel? If it's 16" then you really aren't changing much in length.

Just for the record I think 14.5" barrels with pinned muzzle devices are a complete waste. If it's a suppressor mount then maybe not so much but the length savings still doesn't mean much.

I don't get to go much, but it's usually night hunts for coyotes or pigs and usually pretty mobile. Current upper is an 18inch with a bipod and it's a bear to drag around, mainly because of the damn bipod at the end of the handgaurd. Usually take a 12.5 5.56, 10.5 barrel AK, or a 8.5 300blk. I just want some more horsepower, but honestly it's probably a waste of money.
