Upon the request of a few members in other threads to dicuss "cheap" 10/22 replacement barrels, I wanted to post up my 10/22 results with a green mountain barrel. The 10/22 is in the factory stock, no bedding or pillars, barrel channel opened for the .920 bull barrel - supported at the stock tip with a 1mil felt pad, and VQ hammer/sear trigger kit, remainder of internals are stock; bolt, firing pin, springs, etc..

It is surprisingly accurate with bulk ammo, tested Winchester Western and CCI Blazer at 50 and 100 yards. Normal September 8th 2012 day at American Shooting centers, maybe 70*, n/nw 330* wind at 10mph, front and rear bags. 18" Green Mountain bull barrel, BSA Sweet 22 3x9 scope and Hot Lips magazines, all targets show at 50 yards.

At 100 yards it opened up to about 1.75" on average with the Western ammo. It should be capable of better with the right ammo and I plan to test that further. Also starting tests with a Savage FV-SR but that is another thread.

What experience do y'all have to share?

Good stuff. Did you open up the barrel channel yourself? If you have them, I would like to see more detailed pictures of that.

    Great review Gramps!

Green Mountain makes great stuff. While I don't have any hands on experience with their 10/22 barrels (on my list of things to do) have a lot of experience with their 5.56 barrels. I've built at least 10 rifles using them and have been amazed at their quality/accuracy and price.

    Two of my favs:

Nice, Gramps. Can you clarify which targets were shot with which ammo?

I just picked up a brick of that Western from Academy the other day and haven't tried it out yet. If I get results half as good as yours I'll be pretty pleased.

Wow. Capable of dime-sized groups... I'm assuming at 50 yards? Gramps, if you tell me those dime-sized groups were done at 100 yards then I'm coming over so you can teach me how to shoot proper ;)

Green Mountain has probably done what no other 10-22 barrel maker has done: Produce a barrel that will deliver superior accuracy with every-day ammo.

AC - I don't remember, it was mostly western though. the western was a huge surprise, wish I could find more.

Pilgrim - That was 50 yards. Give me some time and I'll make that happen at 100.

Right on Short! For $90 that is the best addition to a 10/22!

Jared - I used a 7/8 deep socket wrapped with 60 grit sand paper for the majority. Start sanding and test fitting the barreled action until it fits. You'll have to touch up some areas as it will not be a perfectly concentric groove.

Hey Gramps, nice going! I have several 10-22's with lower priced barrels that will get the same tests. Is that stock one of those we haggled on? Nice job!

At 50 yards on a good day I shot a 1 hole 5 round group(barely larger than the diameter of one round) with my 20'' GM barrel....lost the target between the range and the house (black patch dot for shoot n sees) itll shoot really small clover leafs all day, and Im 6 for 6 on shotgun hulls at 100 yards on a still day

This was 5 rounds at 50 yards outdoors on a shoot n see "patch"

35 - A bit hard to describe but the paper was wrapped around the socket, no glue or adhesive. Think of a hotdog in a bun maybe? All done by hand from the receiver inlet to the forend. Start with the butt of the rifle towards you, sand in full length strokes towards the forend a while, switch ends to sand towards the butt and so on. Again, checking with the barreled receiver for fitment, using a dollar bill to ensure no contact of barrel to stock.

I started with 60 grit sandpaper to sand 90% to final fit and the last portion with 150 or 220. It's merely cosmetic and rarely seen but the smooth finish of fine grit paper is just a little nicer.

Flash - Yes sir! That is one I bought from you some year or so ago. It is for my wife and will be receiving an armorall / birchwood stock oil finish. Should look fantastic. If you wanna run the test side-by-side let me know when and where to show up!

Mike - That's a fantastic group! What range? Don't tell me indoor....

Speed - I normally shoot at American Shooting Center but have not been out in a loooong time. Should be out more often starting next month.

Gramps and AKMike, you guys are making me jealous!

With really good ammo I can consistently group about 1" but that's about it. Occasionally I'll get a "ragged single hole" but that's more of a fluke than skill.

I'm using all stock parts (except sights) on my 10/22 and I don't want to get a new barrel but you guys sure are pushing me in that direction.
