Watched the Amazon Fallout series.
Not very memorable, but did a good job making a series that sticks to the gameplay fairly well.
Lots of little jokes put in making sure you know and remember things from the game, like NPCs walking by and refusing to interact, the ghoul remarking that there’s always some dumb shit that gets in the way when you are trying to complete a mission, a full on discussion about doing the right thing or doing what benefits the player. You also see different ammo types in use and other call backs.
Some weird stuff that I don’t think fit the games that well, or I never noticed in the games like the main characters causal attitude towards sex. I never played 1 or 2, but in 3, 4, and New Vegas I don’t remember sex being much of a topic at all. Closest being maybe the Lady Killer perk.
The Ghoul was the best character throughout the 8 episodes. And it felt like his role was closer to that of the player in game than even the vault dweller character.
Maximus was a strange character. Written as if he was born last night and a lot of his personality really didn’t seem to make sense for someone that group up in the wasteland. He seems to have some kind of mental disability at times. Maybe his intelligence stat was set to 0 and luck at 10, idk.
The vault dweller wasn’t bad. I didn’t find her to be some over the top, over powered female lead. She grew and adapted as the series went on fairly well.
I thought the Power Armor, Vertibirds, weapons, etc were don’t really well. The yaugui was kind of iffy looking, probably budget constraints and it’s a short scene. For the most part though the wasteland and Fallout worlds looked pretty good.
Overall I think the show could be picked to death for various reasons, but as a fun show that brings the world of fallout in to live action I enjoyed it. I think the lowest points were the flashbacks to before the bombs fell. There’s a payoff for it so it’s not just filler. But those scenes were just less interesting. I wish some of the sex and nudity was cut (there’s not a lot) so it would be better suited to kids who’ve played the game. It really doesn’t add to the story at all. Lots of gore but it’s kind of cartoonish and over the top (it works).
I’d say it’s worth watching if you have Prime Video and enjoy the games. It left things open for a second season that I hope we get.
