I finally got off my butt and joined the NRA a while back. Ever since then I have been deluged by CRAP. Oh, and deceptive shit telling me its time to renew. I know, why don't I renew a year at a time every damned month??!?? Now I get sent some fricken DVD that I didnt order and I can either send it back, or keep it and they will bill me and keep sending me more. I thought I joined an organization to protect my rights. I didnt know I was joing the BMG music club!! Why the **** do they waste so much money on this BULLSHIT?!?!?

This is the final straw. I will not renew if it continues. Send me DVDs that I have to pay for or return...**** that.

So can someone please tell me how to get them to stop before I tell them where they can shove their membership? I know there is no way some of you are putting up with this. Whats the secret?

I haven't really gotten anything from them since I renewed in May. Not sure I've even gotten a letter asking to renew already (which I understand that one to a point because not only is it asking to renew, but also to "donate").

I joined a couple years ago standard membership. Before the end of that year, they offered Life membership at 1/2 price and I bit. Within a month of going Life they offered Patron at a savings. I've ignored all subsequent offers. That DVD? I haven't even looked at it and I didn't/am not sending it back. And I received only one DVD. I now get my monthly magazine and VERY little otherwise. It will subside and yes they waste a lot of funds that could be better used.

Anytime I have received something in the mail from the NRA, I've sent them a letter telling them if they send me the money to cover return shipment in one of the post office's set rate boxes, I'll return it. Otherwise I'll just chunk it. I made it clear I wasn't interested in extra garbage in the mail - I get enough of it already. Sometime ago it started working. After a few crying notes from them, they seemed to get the message.

Under federal law you do NOT have to return or pay for unsolicited materials you receive through the mail. You can keep it, throw it away or wipe with it. You do NOT have to pay.

It's a numbers game - overall, it generates more revenue than it costs them. They ALL do it in my experience - hell, even Consumer Reports does it to me. I've simply learned to accept whatever the send as a gift, and ignore any "billings", etc. Do that a few times, they won't send it again.

Having said that...Yeah, I'm a "Patron Member". Whoopie. Except that it means that I'm willin' to put my money where my mouth is. As I said - they ALL do it, so pick your poison - but be a member of at least ONE national gun-rights organization - because they're the ones that'll at least TRY to help us on a national level. You ain't gonna like ANY of 'em all of the time - but without our support, it'd be a LOT worse.

I rarely get stuff from them. And when I do, I don't mind.

Then again, I was kind of on the "inside" of the fight in CA and saw exactly how much NRA did for us there. NRA is a very good organization to support. Nationwide, it is the best choice if you're only going to support one.

The NRA finally lost me when they made that deal with the Devil (ie., Congress and the DISCLOSE act). So much for all that talk about upholding not just the 2nd Amendment but the entire Constitution. I will say, though, that when I opted out of the junk mailings they did actually stop 95% of that stuff.

I upgraded my lifetime membership to "Patron" level also at the National Meetings a couple years ago in Phoenix. I got a really nice wall mounted NRA Bowie knife in the mail. A nice bottle of tequila would have been more fitting.... I will continue to give a couple hundred bucks a year to the NRA-ILA.

I didn't get a DVD... I feel left out. I opted out of their junk mail a year or so ago. It is ridiculous how much crap they send you.

Look on the back of your membership card and there is a number for member services. There is also a web address for the same service. Any time I need something done regarding NRA, those folks took care of it pronto. If they're pissing you off, then tell them. If they fail to fix the problem, that is when you should tell them to "F" off.

Please................... give NRA a chance to fix it before you blast the whole organization to Hell.

I'm asking............Was this country a sorry assed place to be a shooter long ago? In the early days of the Brady Bunch, we caught shit from every direction!

Did we have to sign and show ID for a box ammo and even for a box of .22LR cartridges? (Don't believe that?......It's true!)

Did the Assault Weapons ban tank with those damned magazine capacity restrictions?

Did the Supreme Court rule that firearms ownership was your personal right as a citizen and not as an armed militia member?

Now we can hold our heads high as firearms owners without being trashed by every two bit politician! Politicians are afraid to trash us now.

NRA took care of all that. You owe them a chance to make those issues right.

I asked what I should do before I tell them to shove it and both of the above seem reasonable. I'll "opt-out" and give it a couple months.

There are other 2nd amendment organizations that are better at supporting our rights. NRA, much like Ruger, has compromise on the agenda. In fear of horrid gun restrictions, they tend to agree to restrictive legislation as a compromise. While they are becoming nothing more than the Nation Rhino Association, they still beat the hell out of the ACLU!

Personally, I do not like companies that sell my information like an upstart pimp to his whores. The telephone companies are like that. I stopped getting a land line for that reason alone. I shouldn't have to spend the time to opt out to avoid a deluge in junk. Rather, I should be sent a letter stating that if I wanted them to send me junk, I could "opt in". But that doesn't make any money.......

    From the NRA website:
Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?
A: Simply email us at membership@nrahq.org or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.
