I'm looking for anyone who has bought a surplus Humvee from the government auction sites or has first hand experience with this.
I have a auto dealer who is registered to buy from the government (it requires a background check)
I'd just like to have some insight on how it worked for you and what it takes to get one street legal and registered

Please only 1st hand information. I can and have read so much about it online myself so I'm just looking for someone I can talk to who has done it.

    thanks
My nephew has made a business of restoring the hunvees that are auctioned off. He has not had to go thru some dealer. He has purchased some that literally only need of a new battery. He has a man that goes thru them mechanically….paints them…,,,sprays the inside with bed liner (custmers-option )and sells them for hunting vehicles. I don’t think they are made road compliient.

I don't understand the highlighted sentence. The government (DLA Disposition, to be exact) does not sell directly to the public as its predecessor, DRMO, used to do.

DLA now contracts directly with Ritchie Bros., famous for their GovPlanet.com website which is the place for state, local and federal agencies, including military, to sell equipment.

Once an individual signs up and and is approved to buy on that website, they are able to bid on all IronPlanet marketplaces, including GovPlanet.

Any citizen of the United States, who is registered with GovPlanet and received bidding privileges, can bid and buy government surplus.

I have an account, and could purchase a HMMWV today if I wished to do so.

The only restrictions are ITAR, meaning certain items could not be shipped outside of the country.

I believe most guys are registering in states with less stringent rules to make them road legal. This may no longer be an option though. The SF-97 (?) used to be marked as off road only.

I've been out of the game a while but steelsoldiers.com is a great forum with tons of information.

@vmax Would you be willing to share a ballpark of how much this ended up being to get a street legal one? The one you ended up with looks to be in much better shape than the average on on GovPlanet.

No electronics? I'm going to assume that this has electronic fuel injection? I would doubt a carbureted vehicle would pass emissions tests now, but I'm not a mechanic, just guessing.

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't know those were diesel motors.

This one was brought off of Gov plantet a few years ago
This is the 1st Gen M998 but damn it didn't get beat to shit.
    Its pretty darn nice
    8800 miles on the odo

What Ive seen and been told is that if you buy a decent shape , roar lega, titled and registered rig they cost anywhere between 18-30k depending on configuration
The ones with hard tops , turbo diesels and 4 speeds fetch more usually

Ive been told stories of guys getting really nice ones off of Gov planet that were listed as non running

And they got them and found out they only need batteries because they had been removed

Its a crap shoot but they take lots of photos of them and its good to have a person who knows what to look for.
When I was looking, they were selling for $2500-8000
    All over the place

Plus you have to have a background check prior to giving permission to bid on these
