Was out working on an antique bread slicer for the DIL...and gave Cam's question some thought.....

Cam, like me is over 60.....what is the most valuable thing we have? The thing we can't buy more of?

    Time........

We are retired and home together, but she is always working on the something and I am too, separately.....she watches TV, I'm on the NET........

Give some your time devoted to her, find something (the event is not as important) that you can give her your time and complete attention.......

May sound corny as hell and if you don't really like each other any more....disregard.......

My wife is very materialistic. She has shown interest in a set of spourtals. Has not requested anything though. She bought some nice sheets before Thanksgiving and said that would be her Christmas present.
Well just make sure those sheets aren't her Christmas present...that is all a ruse!!

Actually, she doesn’t play mind games like that and she is very frugal. So far she has been steady for 40 years. I’ve got a few more things in mind she may like but won’t buy for herself.

Yep. Luckily the letter openers only take an hour or two. I can work on them (and the two knives) while I'm heat treating that monster cleaver for Hoji.
How long does that thing take to heat to working temp?

With a piece of steel that big, the major challenge is getting it to heat evenly. Once the forge is going full blast with both burners, it'll heat up in a couple of minutes. I have to put a piece of steel in above the work piece to deflect the burners so they don't create hot spots, and that puppy starts sagging pretty quickly - it can be alarming, but it does keep the burners from directly hitting the piece I'm trying to heat. But in no time the steel is at 1500 degrees and ready for the oil quench.
