I quit smoking in July 1971 when I had a really bad case of the flu. I got lucky, it was my 6th or 7th attempt. I used to tell my friends that the best way to quit was to pledge $500 annually to Teddy Kennedy's reelection campaign...that if they quit and got caught smoking ever again they'd pony up the money or be forever branded a lying, dishonest, untrustworthy scum weasel. I know, I know, that's one of those double edged swords but it'd work, I am sure. Never met anyone who did this, though. Guess they weren't all that serious about quitting. But 2 shipmates of mine back in 1983 pledged a $500 reward to any crew member on our Frigate who caught them smoking after they quit on the first day of our 6 month deployment to the Western Pacific. It worked for them.

Variations on a theme. You might pledge to go camping with Pete Buttigieg or share a hot tub with Nancy Pelosi and Jerry Nadler buck naked.

Cold turkey. Just bumped my fat ass in my recliner with ash tray next to it. It might get me to hack up a tar ball. I guess if one day at a time works for drunkards it will work for smoking.

Seeing as I sold a few things recently perhaps I should lay out $9.00 this morning for the pack I don’t buy.

Never smoked cigarettes but smoked a pipe for about 30 years. Tasted good, and packing it, lighting it, and getting it burning "right" - was something to do with my hands while I thought. Fooled myself that I wasn't "really" smoking because I "didn't inhale" - just like Bill. Even while exhaling smoke through my nose, I "didn't really inhale."

One (June 24, 1997) day I felt a lump in the roof of my mouth. Got good and scared. Started thinking about mouth cancer, and even if it does not kill me they'll have to cut away so much of my face I'll get fired for being so frightening-looking. I loved my job, and needed it - to pay the bills. I got sick to my stomach from fear, had cold sweats, and could not even get my act together enough to pick up the phone to make a doc appointment to get it checked out. Al the while thinking, "I did this to myself... yeah, it tastes good, but a lot of things taste good and don't give you cancer."

Quit that day. Fear is a great motivator! So is shame (did it to myself, nobody else to blame). Kept my pipes and tobacco (finally gave the bag of tobacco to a still-smoking friend, before it got stale) just so I knew it was my own choice, and I could reconsider any time.

My older brother, who smoked 2-3 packs of Camels a day, said to himself that if his kid brother could quit, so could he. And he did. Went to Nicotine Anonymous for a while but he quit and made it stick. My aging brain can not subtract 1997 from 2022 without a calculator (June to March, fuzzy where you start counting) but seems to me it is close to 25 years.

You can do it. Stick with it. Play a game of "I quit smoking, I wonder what will get me in the end if not that?"

I had just woke up from a nap and the wife offered me a cookie before I even had a chance to think smoke. I have cleared my ash try off the table by my chair also.

I’ll see my doctor on the 30th. Perhaps he will up the pain meds seeing as I show that I don’t have an addictive personality

When it comes to tobacco, we all have an "addictive personality"; it is the most addictive substance we know of. So, there is no "I'll just have one" in real life.

You must make a "clean break", or, give-up and try again later. Remember that since the 1960's, over 50 million Americans have quit, so it's not "impossible".

Years back while a Family Doc, I learned to help folks by having them handwrite messages on index cards and read them before bed every night and upon awaking every morning. Things like "I CAN quit!", "I WILL quit!", I AM going to do this!", etc. Our brains function like computers in many ways.

As a wise older guy said: "If you think you can; or if you think you can't, you are right!"

    Good Luck !

Whatever you, don't wear a nicotine patch while smoking.

    I'm not kidding.

A friend's Dad did that, had a massive heart attack and died.

It was determined that the cause of death was smoking while wearing a nicotine patch.

I dipped two cans of snuff every day for many years, maybe 20. I saw my gums receding and knew trouble wasn't far away so tried quitting several times. My first tactic was to simply throw away the can but that night I was in the alley with a flashlight goin thru the trash for my can. I was careful never to throw it away somewhere else or dump it on the ground, I wanted a "just in case" plan which I used a bunch. How many times I told myself this is my last can. Then one day I pulled up to the usual 7-11 for the day's supply, sat there before going in, then simply drove away and never looked back. I'd always heard quitting snuff is very hard because of the immediate rush it gives being so close to under the tongue for immediate absorption into bloodstream. That was maybe 15 years ago, give or take. Even today when I go to same 7-11 I see all the cans back there and just shake my head.

You can do this. If you trip, get back up and keep walking. Lots of folks here pulling for you. Much of the battle is within the mind once the physical addiction begins to wear off. People will say just don't think about it and it will go away. That's like telling someone, "whatever you do, do not think about a yellow Volkswagen, do not think about it". Well, what are you then going to think about but a yellow Volkswagen..

    Best wishes !!

    Trip from hell!

Still haven’t had one. Good for you!

Wife kept handing me her butts for disposal. Sounds like she doesn't want you to succeed.

Her car is just an trash bin on wheels. Nasty! I partake and simply can't live that way. Window cracked and ventilation on pass thru (not recirc) in the car. At home, I o/s smoke or at immediate air intake of an exhaust fan.

It's a pointless habit with no upside and I wish you the best at quitting.

I’d much rather her keep her trash in her car then litter. Where most people will empty the trash on a monthly basis she does not.

As far as the cigarette butts go I have pointed out simple butt out the window grass fires. I don’t burning people out on my mind.

The trip was worse on her then me. She has to go back for the upper endoscopy. Personally wish the did upper & lower on the same day.

Her dad has stepped up in saying he would take her for the endoscopy. Their vehicle is better suited for old fat peoples.
