I have been contemplating getting a .308 although I don't want to take out a home equity line of credit :). Any recommendations for a budget friendly, but reliable 308? I'm not looking at the bottom of the barrel cheap necessarily. I have a Stag AR-15 that I have been happy with and it has been reliable (admittedly I haven't put more than a 1,000 rounds through it as I shoot my handguns far more.

    Savage Axis from Academy.

Second. I have a Savage Edge (name prior to Axis) XP, and it's the best bargain bolt-action .308 you'll find!

What do you consider budget $$$? Need a scope? What are you doing with the rifle? How far you going to shoot?

AR10's are heavy. But great if you need quick, big fire power.
Honestly, just want one. Probably will not shoot more than a couple of hundred yards and I have a scope already. AR10 would be nice, but now due to RA weight is more of a concern so i am thinking bolt. For quick fire power, I have an assortment of options already. Doubtful i will run into a situation where i need quick 308 rounds….but you never know .

First, I would determine what would be the primary usage of the rifle and then set a budget, and also whether you plan on using a scope and factor that into your budget as well.

One thing good about a 308 rifle, there is no shortage of brands and types of rifle in that caliber, as well as normally a good selection and variety of ammo choices if you don't plan on reloading .

If you're looking for something different check out the PTR-91. They are fun to shoot but are a bit on the heavy side. As a bonus they will sling brass into the next county.

Most of these are available with a scope.

Cool. Yeah give that Axis a try. It wont break the bank and it'll give ya an idea. You can always sell if you don't like or wanna upgrade. 308's move pretty well.
Thanks. I will keep that in mind. I was browsing Riflegear and the Sig Tread caught my eye. Anyone have any experience with it in 308?
