(My old-school scoped Remington Model 760 pump-rifle in 7.62NATO, with 15 round police mags, is my SHTF weapon of choice.)

Fwiw, I would LOVE to find a Webley Mark II-V in shootable condition. - Either converted to use 1/2 moon clips or unconverted is acceptable.

Only anecdotal, I've shot both. The .303 British is 7.7 X 56mm, can handle heavier loads and have been used to take down elephants and polar bears. The ballistics are similar though the 7.62 is a bit flatter, the .303 (according to some I've read, I have no way to test it) retains greater energy at distance. I've personally shot .303 rounds chrono'd at nearly 2800fps, I've shot holes in 1/2" plate, etc.

I didn't say the 7.62 was a bad round or even that the .303 was better. You said the 7.62 was superior and I asked in what respect? I find them to be very comparable rounds. I happen to prefer the .303 and was asking what you prefer about the 7.62. 'Superior' is more than ballistics to me.

Not trying to start any kind of caliber war, don't care what you shoot I was just interested in what you meant by 'superior'.

With regard to 'standard government ammo' the 7.62 is newer and due to improvemnents in metallurgy, loaded a bit hotter than the older .303 however that's not what I would consider a comprehensive comparison or indicative of 'superior'.

Finally I like the history of the .303 littered with colorful stories such as Sgt Snoxall firing 38 rounds in 1 minute all hitting a 12" bull at 300yds (including 3 reloads).

Baden-Powell was a British officer who fought in Britain’s wars in India and Africa in the late 1800s and early 1900s. One of the battles that Baden-Powell won is still taught at War Colleges here in the US. He successfully held off an army of 5,000 Boer soldiers in the Siege of Mafeking. Baden-Powell successfully defended the city for 217 days, despite being outnumbered 5 to 1 and having an “army” that was partially comprised of young local teenage boys (many of those boys were black and were defending their city and their families under Baden-Powell’s leadership).

After his military career, Baden-Powell founded the international Scouts organization, and helped his sister Agnes co-found the Girl Scouts. George Soros wants Black Lives Matter to tear down the little statue of Baden-Powell in the town of Dorset to strike a blow against racism. A man who literally saved the lives of black children and families during his military career is too racist to have his statue remain standing, apparently.

Forget about the fact that the Scouts are currently being bankrupted due their disastrous decision to cave to mob demands a few years ago. The Scouts used to be a great organization, when it was following the vision of Lord Baden-Powell. It instilled kids with outdoor skills, self-confidence and other important things like duty, honor and Christian values like the importance of family and doing good works for your community.

And it looks like those values stuck for a lot of British people who went through Scouting programs as kids. When word of Soros’ impending attack on Baden-Powell’s statue got out, former Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts traveled from miles around to protect the statue. The City Council in Dorset had already caved to the mob and voted to tear the statue down. But the former Scouts said “No.” A group of middle-aged and elderly, normal, everyday people formed a ring around the statue and told the rage mobs to go pound sand. The British press admirably called them a “ring of steel.”

They won. They didn’t need Bikers for Trump or a militia club armed with AR-15s. All it took was guts. They simply stood together and told the mob, “You don’t get to destroy this important piece of our heritage and history. No.” And they won! The City Council backed down, the rage mob left, and the statue will remain. Scouts are still out there protecting the statue.

Remember this when the mobs come for Trump rallies in a few weeks, or for a statue in your town. They are coming for us. What they don’t expect, because they’ve been allowed to run wild and unchecked for two weeks now, is for people to stand up to them and say, “No.”

.303 & .308 are ballistically similar. The .303 can take a heavier bullet, but it still is slightly below .30-06 performance.

I was comparing the .303 to the .455. I'd rather have the rifle than the slow Webley round. Those Webleys were almost as ineffective as those old 1911's.....

FYI, IF loaded with 220 grain or heavier bullets & fired out of the short Webley Mark II, III, IV or V .455 caliber barrel will TUMBLE inside the K5 area of the human body & therefore makes a VERY SEVERE WOUND, even at <700FPS.
(Because of the longer "government standard barrel", the Mark VI handgun is NOT as GOOD of a "STOPPER" on human-size targets as the earlier models are.)

Btw, the .303 makes a better chambering for double-rifles & cape-guns, due to the rimmed configuration.
(One of the "purtiest" cape-guns that I've ever seen was a circa 1900, VERY ORNATE & custom-made by a London smith SxS .303x20bore. = The asking price was 10,000 Pounds Sterling in 1976.)

Could be a number of factors. Remember there were a number of changes made to the M16 and it's ammo before they ever arrived in Vietnam to the soldiers. The powers that be at the time had such blind faith in the M16 that they sent them over to Vietnam without any cleaning kits!
