Damn. Now im more confused than when I started. All this info is great, and your recommendations are spot on. I guess I should start with a cheaper .22 and get some range time. Then get something else after down the road. And an AR15. I ride a motorcycle though, so Im still unsure about how to transport this without the LTC. Ive been told in a rifle bag on my back is fine. But if it isn't... its not just a ticket if Im stopped by a cop riding to the range.
Good choice. You can shoot a 22 all day for $20 and have extra ammo when you are done.

The low recoil really helps you learn to shoot properly without getting beat up or developing a flinch.

A Ruger American is about the best and cheapest thing going right now but Savage makes some good ones too as well as others. Go Ruger 10/22 if you want an autoloader for sure.

This will also allow you time to learn more and make a better decision on what to buy next.

    Welcome to the addiction.

Buy a modern bolt action 22lr and learn to shoot it. Start with open sights, get to be a good shooter, then later upgrade to a scope on the rifle, then become a better shooter. Won't cost an arm and a leg to shoot, very, very little recoil, and lots of fun to shoot. Unless you really have a specific need for a rifle in a centerfire cartridge, I would even suggest one at this time for a beginning shooter.

Russian snipers did very well with them during WW2. I'll grant you that they are not the prettiest rifle, but they can still get the job done in capable hands. And to be fair, an AR isn't a pretty rifle either.

Soviet sniper kills were guaranteed to be inflated for propaganda purposes.

For the collector looking for a milsurp, mausers and enfeilds are within reach, and are far far nicer

Mosins are great. Reasonably accurate with a good bore and when you are done shooting it you just throw it in the dirt and walk away. It’ll be ready when you want to shoot it again.

Yeah, but you do that with all your rifles.

From the few documentaries I have seen, the actual kills and the snipers were the propaganda, not the number of kills. But if you have sources or links that show otherwise, I'd be interested in seeing those.

Now the Russian female sniper units were very heavily propagandized, but they were also very effective and deadly with the Mosin rifles.

Russia was a pretty target rich environment and the ranges would have been fairly short for modern imaginations of “sniping”.

Although some propaganda is likely, I don’t doubt the number of sniper kills would be high.

High no doubt, but tbe russians understood propaganda and lying better than anyone, we could spend the next 4 pages detailing times where the USSR lied.

And its not like they decided to all the sudden tell the truth about sniper kill counts

Put my vote in for a 1903 rifle. If your looking for the bolt action WW2 style rifle, might as well get the real thing.

In terms of WW2 bolt actions, I’m personally partial to the British Enfield rifles, but I’d be hard pressed to recommend them simply based on the availabilit; https://ammoseek.com/ammo/303-britishy of ammo.
Are you implying 303 British is in short supply? If so, see: https://ammoseek.com/ammo/303-british, what comes up is the first page of 4 pages.

I don't know a ton about guns, but Im slowly learning. What do you guys suggest in terms of the style, price, caliber etc?
    THANKS!

In what part of Texas are you? If you are near Texarkana (NE Corner), I will gladly go to a range with you and bring some of my bolt action rifles for you to try out. I have at least one in 22LR - a Remington 513T Matchmaster; one in 22 WMR (22 magnum) - a Marlin 25MN; one in 308 - a Savage Axis XP; a couple in 7.62x54R - Mosin Nagant 91/30 and a Mosin Nagant M44; one in 7mm Mauser - Mauser Chileno 1895; and a Mauser 24/47 in 8mm Mauser; and a Savage Arms Model 111 Long Range Hunter in 300 WIN MAG. I may also have another one or two around.

I figure you are better off trying out some guns to get an idea of what YOU like as opposed to reading all the balderdash here and then trying to determine which is best for you based on this tangled mass of confusion can of worms.
