How far back are records keep to show ownership. Example: If I bought a pistol in 1976 at a sporting goods store, would the state have records for the sale? Thanks

If your referring to me, I didn't keep any records. I was wondering what the retailer kept and would the state or some agency be aware that I owned that gun, being that far back in time. Not for a friend, I actually own the gun. More curious than anything. Thanks guys for all responses. What kind of records were kept in 1976?

If the store still exists with the same FFL, they should have a copy. When a FFL is no longer their log book & forms are sent to BATFE.
The initial answer still stands....the shop that sold it keeps those records for as long as they're in business. If they close, the records are sent to the ATF. Been that way since the GCA of 1968.
