Preface,
I've been to California quite a few times in the last 40 odd years. SF, LA, Monterey/Carmel, San Diego, Tahoe. Those trips were mostly in the late 80s and through the 90s. From where we sit, it would seem that the whole state has gone to hell. Maybe, maybe not. Thus, I present my Thanksgiving trip breakdown.
Wednesday 11/27.
We drove from Abilene to DFW airport. Busiest travel day of the year. Right?
Honestly, traffic was light to medium. Flowed like water over a cliff. Got to the terminal a bit too early. Flight was non eventful. Full plane (of course) but smooth and pretty stress free. Landed in Palm Springs and rented a car. Covered the 40ish miles to La Quinta, CA in decent time. Now we're really in Commie land. Heh.
Thanksgiving day we just did the usual with the kids. (Daughter and SIL from Burbank and daughter from Vancouver, BC). Cussed and laughed at an unfamiliar oven in the rental. Made a decent meal in spit of our selves. Basically just did the whole holiday thing.
11/29. Black Friday.
We drove from La Quinta to Downtown Palm Springs and spent the day. Yep, I prepared myself for the worst. Totally unnecessary. No freak show. No shit on the sidewalks. Traffic was better than anything near DFW or Austin. Good gosh that landscape is beautiful. Really didn't see anything political besides a "protest group" on one street corner. Something about hugging trees or whatever. Never felt unsafe.
Closest comparison I can give is San Antonio river walk in the early 90s. (Which we've sworn off since). Mexican food equaled Mi Tierra. (Flame suit on).
Gays? Lesbians? Others? As much as it pains me to say it, Texas has as many, or more walking around minding their own business.
Nutshell, Palm Springs is a place worth visiting. (Yeah, I know the schools had a bomb threat today. Abilene has their moments too)
Saturday. Me and momma left the kids and went up the mountain to Pinyon. South of Indian Wells. Absolutely gorgeous. Scenery, short hikes here and there. Lunch at a hole in the wall where everyone was friendly. Real folks.
In summary. Gun laws and taxes can make life seem like hell in the middle of a desert paradise. The "alternative lifestyle" people are everywhere.
California has some of America's most beautiful countryside. Priority #1. We need to keep Texas conservative. Priority #2. Helping California turn back to conservative values will help all of us in the long run. Pray for our brothers in arms out there. Support them if you can.
Like Texas, it's the large city bullshit that's hurting them and U.S.
