Yeah I’ve been driving the 2018 Nissan Titan Pro 4X w/5.0 Cummins for over a year now. For a small displacement engine it has a lot of power. It’s the first non Chevy or Ford for me in my entire lifetime.

    And let’s be clear:
    I ain’t a “native Texan”.
Not claiming that at all in my tongue-in-cheek original post.

To me, “being Texan” is a state of mind, and I’m learning/loving being exposed to it.

The alternative is this guy, born in El Paso...I don’t think true Texans want to claim him, but YMMV

    A little Suburban tidbit:

Back in the mid 80s my employer bought new Suburbans every year from a high volume dealer in DFW. One year, (86/87?) the dealer told us that would be the last year for Suburbans. GM was going to quit making them. After review, GM realized that Texas alone could support the Suburban project and still be profitable!

I drive a dented, rusty (a little smelly) 97 GMC Z71. Gas has been in it so long it barely burns and the wife won't even ride in it. Most everything still works, more or less but not like it used to. It has small unexplained leaks occasionally and the headlights are little more than ornamental........
    Sounds nice.

Have to stop now, depressing myself.

Bought the wife a new Equinox, the 2.0 Turbo is peppy but gas mileage averages around 24 mpg.
The 96, 97, and 98 GM trucks with the Vortec 350 engines are still some of my favorites. I had a 97 1500 extended cab Z71 that I put 130k miles on, and traded in because my wife just had to have this beautiful red Ford Explorer. Biggest vehicle mistake I ever made. That POS spent more time at the dealer than it did at my house. Ford finally bought it back after we got a lawyer involved who specialized in Lemons. She got a 97 Suburban after that, with the Vortec 350, that we bought with 85k miles and we put another 65k on it before trading it in on a new Tahoe. Around the same time I bought a 96 Chevy 2500 crew cab long bed 4X4 with the Vortec 350 and a 5 speed that got over 20 mpg on the highway. That truck had over 300K miles on it when I sold it, and all I’d ever done to it was replace the A/C Compressor.

Yeah the profit margins in these are insane.

Of the 300k-ish annual sales of large SUV’s, GM’s share is about 75% of those.

To put things in perspective from my former career...large LX and GX SUV’s from Lexus sell in very small numbers, but are responsible for HALF of Lexus division’s profits globally.

About $60k in profits are taken on the Lexus LX as they move from TMC (Japan manufacturer) to TMS (North American sales arm), and then from TMS to dealers, before it ever gets sold to a customer.

If you want more power in that 5.3, old friend of mine builds some great turbo kits for them. Cast manifolds, good quality stainless flex joints, etc.

How you only got 140k on a 01?

I've had two suburbans. Great cars, and I loved both of them. Currently have a Tahoe, which is easier to park and get around town in IMO. Its my favorite car I've owned. 320K miles on it, done very little work on it. Had the tranny rebult 2 years ago, 2 water pumps, 1 alternator. Its been a great car, and has literally been coast to coast and border to border.

I keep waiting for the motor to give out. But a friend who is a mechanic says the 00 to 04 chevy V-8s can get to 500K miles.

@pronstar Looks good, Suburbans are nice. That’ll probably be my wife’s next vehicle, even though she thinks they’re too big, four kids and all, she likes her Pacifica. Gonna check into the CPO stuff, seems like it might be a good way to go.

If you are what you drive, I guess I’m just all American with no frills. I’ve owned at least one Wrangler since 2003. Currently have two, no power windows or locks and both with manual transmissions and the 4.0L.

First vehicle I had was an 88 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban. It had the 454 in it. It was also lifted and had 37s on it. I took that truck up and through some crazy stuff and don't ever remember having to put it in 4wd. Momentum always got me through. The back was a great shag pad. ;)
