My wife has a friend and her husband did that......about a year or two ago. He was not that fortunate. Arrested and lots of money for a lawyer and court. I don't know for sure but don't think they dismissed it either. I think he was convicted and got probation. I've only met him once.

The officer told me that prior to the new law, they were taking roughly two people a week to jail. He said he appreciates the new law.

I travel a lot for work. So much that I have a dedicated travel backpack for flying( 5.11 72 hour rush) that sits in a giant zip lock bag in the closet and only leaves that container when I am packing for a flight.

I have 2 other 5.11 72 Hour Rush bags( different colors) one is my hunting bag and one is for when I am traveling by car. Neither of those will ever see the inside of an airport.

I don’t travel as much these days, enough to make not having pre-check an inconvenience. I have now designated this bag “air travel only”. It’s a Tumi backpack, so at there prices I only own one lol. I may invest in a couple of other backpacks for this very reason.

As far as I know, any screw-up which results in a TSA incident report being filed will result in a 1-year Pre-Check time-out.

I have friend that is an LE, he was given a firing pin at shot show in Vegas, needless to say they stopped him going through security. He was delayed for about 3 hours, they kept the pin and he was on his way. He said it took about a year for them to send him paperwork and finally clear it up. That to me is insane! Our tax dollars at work!

The scary part is that while the law prevents you from being arrested at the scene, it is a defense to prosecution and they can still file criminal charges against you.

The little TSA guy that was in the room with myself and APD said that I’d receive a call or letter, he mentioned the possibility of a fine up to $3500. But said he’d never seen one that high. So I do expect a TSA fun coupon to show up at some point in time. I think it is a bit ridiculous, I’m not a criminal, or terrorist, just a simple human that made a very human error. Is what it is.

Crazy thing, the night before I went through the bag checking what I thought were all pockets. Found one of my knives, threw it on the counter and told my wife “ I’m glad I found that, I would hate to lose it at the check point LOL”. And then this..
I usually dump everything out of my backpack and completely repack it

Similar happened several years ago in SF airport. After a hunting trip I had 3 rounds in the backpack. After a 30 minute delay the rounds were confiscated and I was on my way. (My wife had long since abandoned waiting for me) For the next year every checked bag had that little note that TSA went thru my bag. This was before precheck, so no penalty there. I learned my lesson, separate backpacks.

    Hence dedicated, quarantined travel bag.

I lost a round of 9mm in one of the other two bags( my former airplane bag) and just said screw it, get another one.

5.11 Backpacks have space time continuum holes in them that make errant rounds of ammo reappear at the most inappropriate times

I haven’t lost a live round in my travel back pack but TSA did make a huge stink and pull me aside when they found a few pieces of brass in the bottom of the bag

I once wore a pair of 9mm casings in the gauged holes in my ears and they said nothing about it. Said I may have to take them out if they set off the metal detector( which they did not)

Yup, I was confident once. Good to see some things never change!

It is not confidence, but preparation and routines. As mentioned, quarantine your travel bags, always empty then pack, always know where every gun you own is, check twice, then check again, etc.

I got a buddy, he was a contractor and came thru Dubai on his way home. They found a live round in his luggage and well, there were some delays.

Had a buddy who was a retired Marine forgot a M1911 in his bag when he checked into the Austin airport. He spent the night in jail but the DA declined to press charges.

As someone who travels 1-2 times a month, I never use the bag I carry for work for range trips. I had separate, dedicated range bags. I did almost go through a Pre-Check line with large folding knife I carry, I found it while I was placing my backpack on the x-ray line. Ended up calling the wife to come back to the airport (she had dropped me off) as I didn't want to lose it.

Another buddy of mine flew and found a couple of rounds in his carry-on bag once he got to his hotel. Just goes to show you that TSA doesn't find everything.

But I get a weekly report from that Agency at work on the items the confiscate nationwide, and it's amazing some of the things they find. I suspect the vast majority of true weapons are as they were in your case, forgotten items in a bag. I did not know Texas had a new law about it, but as stated it doesn't preclude the Feds from charging you if they feel it was nefarious.

I have a patch that says "Forget the mistake. Remember the lesson!" Good advice!

Back in 2004 or 2005, a buddy of mine managed to fly all the way to France and back home with a loaded M-1 enbloc in his bag. That was missed by security in both the US and France.

stuff happens, nice to know about the CHL changes. I once had a box cutter blade left in a bag I used for moving tools.. I was pulled aside, entries made in a log book and my pre-check works just fine.

I take my EDC with me when I travel to places with reciprocity, and Atlanta TSA gave me grief on the return because my Pelican gun case only had 1 pad lock. he insisted on two and thew a tsa lock on there (even though those are explicitly forbidden). I had to ask for a supervisor upon landing at love field to have them remove their lock. he was shaking his head mad at them..
