For the AR-15, 300 BLK would be a good option. Ballistically, it's not that far off from being a 30-30. Alternatively, there's the 6.8mm SPC or the 6.5 Grendel.

The 25-45 Sharps is also something to consider. an 87gr bullet at 3000 FPS is nothing to sneeze at.

I think the sharps is interesting. Kind of like clambering an AR-15 in 25-06.

I only question barrel life, but I suspect ammo cost will prevent most from doing mag dumps at the range.

Maybe closer to a .257 Roberts.

Doubt it will ever gain real popularity though.

You don't need an AR 10. I have killed over 20 hogs with my AR 15 with 556 ammo. No issues as at all. Just get a scope/ red dot setup because they tend to spread out once you start shooting.

25-45 Sharps is work looking at as mentioned before if you want to stay semi-auto. You can get either a barrel and re-barrel your upper, or get a barreled upper and just use your AR-15 lower, bolt carrier group and mags. When you're done hunting, you can put the AR-15 upper back on and you're golden. If you handload, dies are available and plenty of bullets in .257, you'll just need to neck up some .223 brass. Factory loads come in 87, 90 and 100gr.

Personally, I'd stay away from using 5.56 on hogs.

I've dropped 1000# cattle with a 22lr. Between eyes, forehead.

223 would have blown their brains out the ears. I've taken whitetail with 223. Heart and lung shots. Grey Fox, Raccoon, Goat....

Errors in shot placement are reduced by bigger cals. Say you shoot at the heart. You miss it by 3" to the side. Hit lungs. In that scenario, a 223 won't do the damage intended. If a 270 is use, that 3" won't matter as much.

However, if the heart is directly hit by either. The animal is the same kind of dead.

You'll also have better luck dropping an animal on the run with a 300blk vs 223. It's that deviation of shot placement and the extra power needed for close is good enough.

Don't discount the 223 because it looks small. Send it down an ear canal and see how effective it really is.

Poly tip 17hmr is a particularly nasty round. It dropped everything I shot with it.

Can't shoot cottontail with it, if you plan on eating it. Then again there's nothing left big enough to eat...

This is why people who do not understand the massive problems feral swine cause( Nate, this is not JUST directed at you) do not understand the difference between eradication and hunting.

We will go out with ARs with night vision and thermal optics. When we roll across a sounder it is put lead in pigs. Anything still flopping gets a .22 to the head or a knife across the throat. 99% of the pigs we exterminate are fed to vultures and coyotes.

If anyone has a problem with this, I suggest you buy land and experience the destruction these invasive pests cause and then get back to us.

When you see them you kill them with whatever you have on hand. We have run them over with a 4x4 ranch vehicle when there is no quick shot available. They are no different than fire ants or zebra mussels

    A big AMEN to that!

Me. I shoot to kill, not to maim. Pests or not, they deserve better. Deliberate gut shots are fucked up.

    Lol.

Who said anything about deliberate gut shots. See below.

Oddly enough, the first feral pig that I killed was with a long-barreled 9-shot .22LR revolver at about 20M, just outside Kirby, Arkansas. = Dressed about 50# & went straight onto the BBQ pit over green peach wood, as soon as we got it back to the house. =====> As my GF (in those long ago days) said: "YUMMY".

The .22 wheel-gun was what I had on my belt, primarily for cottonmouths. - NOT nearly as many feral hogs everywhere, back then.

    yours, satx
