Okay guys, sorry if this has been posted, couldn't find it...

I went to go to Bullet Hole this afternoon, and the wait was over 2 hours for a private bay... Crazy! (The need to upgrade for what they charge!) I also shoot at Blackhawk.. But I cannot shoot my AR pistol there unless I shoot it at 100 yards, which sucks.

What are some other ranges close to San Antonio?

    Helotes!
Unfortunately, the selection of ranges in this town leaves a bit to be desired...

Outside of the Bullethole (a range I prefer to avoid) and Blackhawk (which is better but a bit further of a drive for me), there is an indoor range at Bass Pro Shop, Bracken (which has a bit of a reputation, non-regulars can get prolonged safety lectures), Cedar Ridge (which also has a reputation, albeit less of one than Bracken), A Place to Shoot down on the southside of San Antonio, and Bexar County on the SE side of SA. Nardis has an indoor range on that side of town as well.

DoD ID card holders can shoot at Camp Bullis on the weekends, but it's only open for four hours each day. Guests are now allowed (a recent change), but the prices aren't great.

I purposely omitted Texas Thunder on Bandera Road as it is too expensive and they make you buy their ammo. I've actually never met anyone who shoots there!

There is a range out in Bandera as well, driven by it but have never shot there. It is on the way to Hill Country State Natural Area...

    Cheers! M2

If you use good safety and handling procedures and some good old common sense Bracken is not a bad place to go, which is far more than I could ever say about Cedar Ridge. I've been with or taken almost a half dozen new shooters to Bracken and never had any problems. Furthermore, they like to keep the firing line clean and don't charge by the hour or by the gun. I wouldn't recommend going there on the same weekend as a gun show or any events, because even though they have close to 50 rifle and pistol berms they get packed quick.

    Can you elaborate on that?

If you bring more then a few guns it can get expensive.

So it's $9 for the first gun and $4 each additional. Plus can you even use your own targets or do they charge for additional bullseyes after the 1st 4?

Bracken is a great place for a group of friends to relax at a rustic range. No charge for shooters, just for guns. Say you want to shoot three hand guns or rifles, everyone gets to shoot as long as you wish until you get tired or hungry.

When we do the math, three guns cost (9+4+4= $17.00). Many ranges charge $10+ for each person on the range, so three shooters would cost you $30+, no matter how many guns you bring.

When I shoot alone, I'll go to a range that does not charge by the gun. When I go with a group, I always wind up at Bracken.

If you dont mind the drive Bexar community shooting range in Marion is pretty good. They pretty much leave you alone. Pistol range is usually not crowded although rifle range sometimes is, but never had to wait.

I'm minutes from dietz range. I like their rifle range but the pistol range is lacking. I always get stuck shooting long range because other dudes set the distance. I was there by myself one day for 2 hours at the handgun range. No one bothered me. I even shot my 10/22.

I read the posts: need to have better solution for practical shooting hand guns. Square ranges are dangerous. I have been swept several times by novices. They should be used as a last resort.

I am moving to San Antonio. Trying to find a range similar where I shoot at now in MO. Eight combat bays 25 yards long and about 15 y wide separated by concrete block walls about 2 feet thick and over 10 feet high. This is the most popular part of the club. You set up your own targets but the bays have a patterning board and plate racks. Rules are keep the gun pointed down range, don’t shoot the wall (ever), shots must hit the berm (but there is a high hill). I work from a holster, shoot on the move, reload/reengage, malfunction drills, from a concealed position… I like to use the Bill Drill: ISPC target, 6 rounds fast as you can, keeping hits in the A zone at 5 to 8 yards and maybe more with improved skill.

Where can I shoot like that anywhere in Texas—preferably around San Antonio?

Or who has some land, a passion for shooting and would get involved in starting a club? Hill country looks good. I drive 50 minutes to shoot now and would think nothing of an hour drive for a safe and practical place to shoot.

Bullet hole has 25 yard private bays with walls like you mention. But you cannot shoot steel targets, and can only shoot paper targets.
