Veterans are receiving letters from VA prohibiting 2A rights
How would you feel if you received a letter from the U.S. Government informing you that because of a physical or mental condition that the government says you have it is proposing to rule that you are incompetent to handle your own financial affairs? Suppose that letter also stated that the government is going to appoint a stranger to handle your affairs for you at your expense? That would certainly be scary enough but it gets worse.

What if that letter also stated: “A determination of incompetency will prohibit you from purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition. If you knowingly violate any of these prohibitions, you may be fined, imprisoned, or both pursuant to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, Pub.L.No. 103-159, as implemented at 18, United States Code 924(a)(2).”?

Since he only posted selected parts of the letter, I cannot comment. Talk about vague and bias.

Is the VA full of shirt? Probably? Is the Obama administration socialist? Without doubt. Did that article establish anything? No

If the VA can't even get my brother's checks to him on time and for the proper amounts, what the hell makes you think they'll be capable of something like this? They're so inept that it's sickening.

here's my issue with declaring somebody mentally imcompetent or whatever.........there's a super thin line between the truly insane people that i hope we ALL want to exclude from gun ownership....and the people who have daily mental struggles but are functional

what is the criteria? what level of mental problems excludes somebody?

i spent all yesterday at the Dallas VA working - and frankly - saw plenty who i'd be perfectly ok knowing they didnt own guns

but i also know that simply visiting the mental health clinic isnt of itself - a reason to disqualify

it's a slippery slope on a VERY gray topic if you ask me

As you damn well should. IMHO, the entire VA system is FUBAR, and has been for God only knows how long. They're understaffed, underfunded, and horrifyingly over-worked, and yet no one seems to notice. And that's ignoring all the red tape people need to cut through in order to actually get anything done.

But seriously, folks. If the VA can't do their -current- job properly, what the hell makes y'all think this is gonna be any different?

Wise man. I had a family member who was treated for his mental issues by the VA, and it was pretty horrible. The system, the treatment, the facilities, pretty much all of it. A walk through those halls to visit him was one of the saddest things I have ever seen.

There were some really funny moments though. "General Custer" was there and demanded his (imaginary) troops march in line. There was the "mad flasher" who regularly walked around with no pants (or underwear), and occasionally would "handle up on his business" if you know what I mean and I think you do. There was "the Doc" who would counsel the other patients and prescribe meds for them, then dog-cuss them when the told him to eff off. There were others too, but those I remember the best.

THere are lots of those guys who have no business seeing pictures of guns, much less holding one or shooting one. But as with most goverment run programs, it will not be done right, and will have lots of holes (good and bad).

My wife always lets me know when I get something from the VA and I haven't gotten anything like that. The VA is so jacked up I don't see how they would be able to or even want to try to start messing with something like this. Mr. Bojangles just ruined my day...I've been waiting one year now and was really hoping they would finish it this year but now I'm not counting on it seeing as you've been waiting for two!
They are so fucked up, you can't even get someone on the phone. You have to 'schedule a call back.' Kind of hard to do that on a DSN line overseas. And if you do actually get someone on the line, they are rude, incompetent, and can't/don't want to get an answer for anything. It's pretty disgraceful the treatment we get from these fucks.

I havent seen any of the letters yet but i have had friends get their guns taken because of mTBIs. The VA claimed that until they completed treatment for the TBI that they could become a threat to themselves or others and gave them 1 week to get rid of their firearms and provide proof or they would call Law Enforcement and have the firearms removed. I still have 2 rifles that belong to one of my friends that had this happen to him.

It's a disgrace. Every time I've called I get the same old bullshit. "It's in the review stage or ______ stage". These assholes sent me a letter a few weeks ago asking if I had any more information to back up my claims. WTF? You wait almost two years to ask me that after telling me it's in the final decision stages? I fucking lost it on one lady and told her this is bullshit that I've been waiting so long and asked what the **** they're doing over there. Of course this was after she told me "well sir, claims are taking about 10 months right now". Oh....really. Arrrrrrrrrgggghhh.

What legal authority gives them that right? I'd probably do something stupid if they tried to tell me that.

Just wondering if any of the disabled or recently discharged vets on here have received that letter??

50% Service Connected for PTSD and haven't seen or heard anything yet. If I do I will post FIRST HAND information. Also....there are a lot of posts on this thread about how bad the VA sucks. I fought the bastards in Waco for 4 years and never gave up....kept filling out paperwork...kept disputing when denied. Finally got 30% and 2 years later bumped to 50%. The people in Waco are pricks! The fu....ing young bitches that check you in for appointments are sluts that can't spell War Veteran....BUT.....when you get past all of that.....I see mental health doctors, dermatologist, ENT, Neurologist, eye doctors and a few others in Shreveport and my primary care doctor is in Longview. I would put every doctor, nurse or technician that has treated me up against any one that treated me in the private sector. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I've got 60% from them. Took a year and two months. Funny thing is...the legitimate things that are wrong, they quoted me at 0% but then gave me 60% for just a mental thing and a wrist injury..smh. I'll take it though. But the temple VA is great to me. The ladies at the front desk are frustrating but everyone else is pretty awesome. If i receive any letter along these lines, I'll scan it, edit out the sensitive info (social, case number, etc) and then share it.

I am rated 100% total/permanent and house-bound service-connected. And i have been fighting with the VA for the last two years to get my specialty care appointments. They claim that they do not have the funding to take care of my healthcare issues. Before this i was getting taken care of at the Temple VA Hospital and they were good there. But most other VA clinics and hospitals have sucked. It took me 18 months to get assigned a primary care doctor at the Houston Hospital after i moved to Houston from Austin.

The VA is very hit and miss depending on where you are getting seen at.
