I inherited my 10/22 when my oldest brother passed away several years ago. It originally belonged to my youngest older (LOL) brother and he bought it back in '68. I toyed with the idea of leaving it alone but decided that I'd rather try my hand at refinishing it. I found a three-part series of videos on youtube and I think it worked out well for me.
I used Dark Espresso and Red Oak stains and wondered how it would turn out. In the end I like how it looks. When bright sunlight hits the wood at certain angles a nice hint of red appears. Not too much, but just enough to make a person look closer. It turned out to be a relatively easy process. I'm not known for my patience, or woodworking skills either. Birchwood-Casey Tru-oil and Gunstock wax finished the project nicely. I also took the time to clean up the fitment between the stock, receiver, and butt plate.
Now I need to refinish the metal barrel band, receiver, and buttplate.
