I have been debating on getting a few MAGPUL mag assists or ranger plates floorplate replacements for my AR mags, but I am not sure if they are worth the trouble...

Does anyone use them, and if so, do they really help?

I've read where the ranger plates can somewhat help stabilize the rifle by allowing the magazine to rest on the ground, a vehicle hood, etc. I don't see it really helping with the extraction of a mag from a vest holder as it would be difficult to get a gloved finger in that small hole (which I've learned is hard rubber and is a bit pliable).

The mag assists do have larger loops on them, but other than helping get them from a holder I don't see them making for a good resting place to shoot from.

    Thoughts?

Magpuls aren’t horrible as they can squish and get out of the way. Nice for grabbing a mag out of a pouch, or hanging a finger in with a mag in a pouch.

I bought a few of the Ranger plates late 2000s(?), meh. Wasn’t a door kicker so was just a tacticool thing to have with personal rifle. Never tried using them to stabilize a mag or anything that I can recall. If we did it didn’t impress me enough to remember it.

I use ranger plates on usgi mags. I got a bunch of them real cheap so I have a good supply. If I had to buy them at full price, I'd go with L plates, if those are even still made.

Ranger plates are nice and make it easy to draw mags from deeper pouches. They make it a bit easier to monopod the rifle on harder surfaces, but it's not that big of a deal. Biggest benefit is that it protects the 4 tabs that hold in the baseplate.

I bought a few ranger plates and they seem fairly functional. Best suited for drawing out of a mag pouch. I try not to rest my rifles on the mags, big part of why I own so many 10 and 20 rounders for range work. Just the other day my friend was installing the loops on a few of his. The jury is still out but they were a tight fit and had good ribbing on the inside of the loop. Not sure you gain much with either but they definitely offer a better grip than textured plastic.
