Shot my first buck this afternoon. Have always turned down offers to shoot canned hunts, but really would like some meat in the freezer this spring, so decided to go for it when my best friend called.

I am literally in the middle of gutting and dressing him, so this will be brief. Just wanted to share my excitement and say thanks to everyone who has been helpful with hunting tips along the way. I've shot a lot of animals in my life, including a kangaroo, but the first buck is clearly a fantastic experience.

As anyone who's ever hunted knows, the real work starts after the trigger's been pulled. We had no winch or hanger, but managed using the bed of my pickup.

Anyone have time-tested suggestions for getting blood out of Carhartts?

+1, congrats still waiting on the day I get my first buck, was trying to get out this season but wasn't in the cards. One day

Kangaroo story later. Check this out! Noticed these nasty buggers while I was removing the head. The video is a little graphic. Don't watch during lunch, but deer hunters outta know about this.

Those are the larvae from the deer botfly. It does not affect the meat at all.

Indeed. Here's the description from the video:

"This deer was shot on 1/5/2013 and the parasites were discovered during processing. They are believed to be Cephenemyia, or deer nose bots. In this species, the female fly hatches the eggs inside her body, and ejects them into the nostrils of the deer. The larvae crawl to the throat cavity and live in clusters. After their development is completed, they are expelled from the throat and dig into the soil to pupate. They then emerge as adult flies, and mate, completing the cycle. Yikes.

Very cool you shot it with your grandfathers rifle! The 35 is under rated by folks brought up on magnums. Those larger bullets don't need to be going fast when they connect.

Quick update. Been working with my neighbor to make jerky in his backyard smokehouse using Jimmy O's marinade and a little salt and pepper. It turned out fantastic.
