which is best for home defense ?
A retired DEA agent I knew, recommend #4. His personal observations as told by him. It was more effective then OO.
Since this thread is about home defense, 30 meters should be adequate.grasshopperglock,
I agree with your retired DEA contact about #4 buck OUT TO ABOUT 30M but NOT much beyond that range.
(Between 25-50M, #1 or 0 buck is clearly superior to #4 buck.)
For ranges from CONTACT to 20+M, #4 buck is superior to larger pellets because of its LIMITED LETHAL RANGE.
(Engaging targets at ranges beyond 50M is a job for a carbine or rifle, imo.)
Reference your 3 second "test": NOBODY can do that, including people like me who have a riot-gun (and a 9mm SA pistol) within easy arms reach from my side of our bed, BUT why are you talking about 3 seconds??
(We have an alarm that awakens us when an intruder enters our "secured zone", steps on an interior floor, breaks any window glass and/or "forces a door".)
I figure that I have at least 10-15 seconds to retrieve my riot-gun before any intruder can enter the interior of our domicile and/or cause significant harm.

I double dare someone to wake up out of bed at 3:30 in the morning. And immediately fire a high brass buckshot load (any size) out of a riot shotgun. I'm gonna need a video.
Set up a tent outside and fall dead sleep. You have 3 seconds to engage a target at 15 feet....timed from the second you wake up. No earlier then 2:30a.m.
I wanna see it.

Buckshot (or less) inside the house (unless you have a big ass house, 30 meters = 90+ FT?).
Property defense is different than home defense. When the average person says "home defense", they are referring to things happening INSIDE their home. So yeah, probably nothing more than 30 to 40 FEET for all but the most HUGENORMOUS mansions.ZX9RCAM,
May I suggest that you re-read comment #5, as the answer is: For urban/suburban home defense, buckshot is to be preferred.
(Otoh, on our family farm, where the range may be as much as 200-300M+, you may be defending against a criminal predator armed with a "deer rifle", a carbine/rifle may well be indicated.)

#4 Nitro steel in 3"#4 buckshot is what I keep in mine.
