I’ve had a few 22 Mags over the years..the reason I no longer have one is that I just wasn’t overly impressed or otherwise didn’t find them interesting enough.
I’m considering a 17 HMR maybe to add to the prairie dog tool kit but don’t want to do that if it isn’t a big enough difference from the 22 Mag

I’ve handled a Ruger American Stainless threaded bolt gun and I’ve looked at the Savage A17s...
I think with the right ammo they can shoot quarter size groups at 100

What I’m looking for is a gap gun to do the dirty work up close from 0-175 or so, which I think the 17 HMR could.

    Thoughts...advice...

Pushing it to 175 yards can’t help but think the .17 prob be best. Poor little prairie dogs. Sniff sniff. They sure are cute. What are they doing to cause trouble? Thanks

The .17HMR is more precise. The .17 WSM might work better at 150+ depending on wind conditions.

I’ve hit cans at 300 with mine (HMR). Doesn’t do much to them though.

    Pdogs don't give change.
The right 22lr fits your "need".

    Should be an interesting thread.

I'll start by saying that it depends on what you are shooting

For paper the 17, I think, is inherently more accurate.

For critters I'll say it is dictated by the size of the critter.
    Coyotes need the 22mag
Squirrels or prairie dogs the 17 is great. For eating squirrel the 17 destroys meat worse.

The "point-blank" range for the 17 is a good bit further

I have a Ruger American in .17hmr & a .22 wmr Henry golden boy. The 17hmr gets there faster & flatter. Other than that I haven't had the chance to shed blood with them...only paper punchers.
My RA 17hmr loves the .17gr Vmax. Had the .17gr vmax stacked on top each other the other day @ 50yards. Looked like one shot 3 leaf clover...lol.
The Henry has open sights vs scope like on my RA 17HMR & at 50yards my groups suck...I need to put glass on it & see what she can do.

I have to respectfully disagree..22 LR out to 150 or so on the windy prairie....
I don’t have a 22 LR that can do that

Aim for the head. Makes a bit of a mess but doesn’t hurt the meat.

Ok. Didn’t know you was a cowboy guy. The ones I used to pot shot at lived in little towns which wasn’t near horses. The perch pimp would let us plug a few on Waggoner Ranch but when he said cease fire best quit popping em. He used us to thin the herd.

I have a Savage 93. Its fun gun to shoot. My daughter has shot a group you can cover with a dime. Its extremely accurate. For whatever reason, ours likes the 17g ammo. They also make 20g for it.

A different rifle might have a different result.

And Academy just lowered their prices on ammo.

I don’t think anything likes the 20gr ammo.
