I like to offer reasoning behind why I feel a certain way about a vehicle or a car company in general.
What's your feeling about warranties? I note that Kia offers a very long warranty and I don't imagine it makes sense to do that unless you have a strong reason to believe your product is reliable.

    Am I off base here?

Not pointing a finger at you, but those who falsely believe Toyota reliability is above other auto makers make me laugh ;)

On the contrary, I’m disappointed that I didn’t get the full toyota reliability experience. AC leaks under the dash can cost thousands of dollars to repair (the right way). And my axle should not be worn out under 130K miles.

I believe old Toyota’s are definitely as reliable as the hype. Newer ones I think can be a hit or a miss.

    If the warranty is already out though;

My Tacoma’s warranty just ended. Time to have some fun with it.

Good point. I have an idea or two on what to change on my current car once the warranty expires in a few years. Got a ways to go though. Nothing serious, I mainly prefer to leave things stock.

Guys: High quality warranties, after your factory warranty runs out, can be had for affordable dollars.

I found one (out of state) that proved itself worthy when I called upon it with an A.C. problem with my Tundra.

The dealership service guy wasn't alarmed when I presented it, but I could tell some of the other employees had never heard of such a thing. My extended warranty from an out of state Toyota dealership flabbergasted them, was honored and I just laughed and laughed......

    Why did I laugh?

When I bought the truck from them they tried to sell me an extended warranty for roughly 4 f'n times more in dollars than I found out of state and as I stated: It's valid!

    MTA89,

    Exactly so.

Get a good deal on the vehicle and then get it stuck in and broken off if you're uninformed enough to buy the selling dealership's extended warranty which they'll try to sucker you with......sometimes for mucho thousands with a deductible too. Buy it and you'll be taken to the cleaners....

Avoid them and buy elsewhere for much, much less cost without a deductible.

Legitimate factory extended vehicle warranties can be had for much much cheaper online rather than at your local dealership

Although I generally don’t trust extended warranties, I did get one for my current daily driver out to 75K miles. I have a long commute to work and would run out the 36K mile warranty in short time.

I've had a couple Toyotas. Reliable for the most part, but serious power issues. Little Camry, no big deal, 30+ mph on the highway. Good car.

My 4Runner was terrible on power. I would load it down (not towing) and head for the coast, gas pedal on the floor, could barely get up to 75 on the interstate. Two fillups before I got to Port A.

It would climb out of pretty much anything. Great 4WD, and a decent ride, as long as you didn't need to get up to freeway speed.

I used to be in charge of this stuff - no longer as swmbo has taken over this responsibility, much to my relief and swmbo is now on her way home.

I'll ask her if she can dredge up the warranty dealership name/names.

Best I recall it was an Illinois Toyota dealership.

I've often wondered if our own local dealerships sell lower cost extended warranties to out-of-staters? Oh, the irony if so........

... and she's now home and tells me this is where she bought the last one:

This dealership is not in Ill. as our previous warranty was, but I think Michigan.

    As always: Caveat Emptor!

    And Good Luck!!

Dude's linked-in shows he was a small shop owner with his dad, and thinks much too highly of himself. I certainly wouldn't take his 250 car sample (must have been a slow shop) as authoritative.

Older Toyotas were indeed much simpler and much more reliable. You'd be hard pressed to find a poor running high mileage 22RE, those things were dead simple and solid. But so is the Ford 4.6/5.4, the Gen-III/IV GM V8's, etc. Modern vehicles from all manufacturers are more complex with much different design goals. Overall reliability is actually very good, but that doesn't stop people from believing what they want to believe. Powertrains have never been better. Properly maintained, any new vehicle is going to be about as reliable as any other, and any of them will yawn as they break 100k. Heck, spark plug changes are commonly 100k now. Certain models or certain options will show statistically failures at different rates, but the mean has pretty well normalized across the board. So other than Toyota's lack of failure discrimination in their throttle controllers killing people by running them off bridges at 120mph, I'd say they're just about as good as Ford's still starting on fire. ;)

I simply told the Dealership that I would pay them what I found the lowest price online for an aftermarket warranty for their factory warranty.

They initially said no and came down about $80 bucks and I laughed and and got to the “purchase now” button on my phone and said “last chance” to the warranty sales guy and he buckled and matched the price.

I did the same thing when I bought my Ram 2500. Over $2k cheaper than what the dealer originally quoted.

    Jakashh,

I've used extended warranties roughly 6 times over the years.

On each occasion, the cost they covered was far in excess of what I paid for the extended warranty.

As mowing said in post 193 it's just a Toyota warranty from another dealership. They aren't talking about the aftermarket extended warranty offers like the ones you get in the mail. They're from dealers that don't fleece an owner by overcharging for the exact same Toyota, GM, etc extended warranty. You just have to find the dealers that don't overcharge.
