Highly interesting. Thanks. We have a dear old family friend who makes a good living in the taxidermy business from mounting African Trophies as his main thing. He gets refrigerated trucks delivering heads to his house. You ever hear of an artist in Wilbarger County named Dennis Lingnau? He’s a great guy. He taught me there ain’t no such thing Lesser Kudoo. If you know any rich trophy hunters give him a holler.

    Out here by the lake!

This is a .577 T REX IIRC owned by the guy that had accuratereloading.com. I'll tell you dangerous game rifle really are not to be shot while seated. Standing benches are what you want when shooting they heavy calibers.

My Africa gun is a 6 pound .416 Remington mag that kicks more then every .500 NE I ever shot. Double are damn heavy guns to have to carry all day. I figured have my gun light because I carried it more then shooting it. The excitement of shooting on something big pretty much cancels the recoil felt @ the time.

What happened to the native gun bearers? Ramar of the Jungle showed them a lot?
The thing about that .600 NE is it's truly meant for elephants, hippos, rhino & cape buffalo all of which are shot under 50 yards away, 30 -15 yards being the norm. Sure you can have a skinner from camp carry your rifle, but not everyone is comfortable in handing their $30K+ gun over to a foot who is going to scratch up you $8K upgraded wood or $5K engraving.

I would absolutely toss in $100 for a couple rounds if I could shoot them.

I don't think he said what that rifle weighs.
    That makes a big difference.
I'm thinking gun bearers were needed to carry the 13-15 lb guns.

My .338 Lapua weighs about 13 lbs with the scope.
For grins and boredom I shot it with the muzzle brake removed and DAMN. It kicks.

That 600 Nitro generates about 15-20% more energy and has no muzzle brake!!!

I'd be in for a couple of rounds for bragging rights and to support my shoulder orthopedist's knife collecting income.

    Damn.

A .600 NE has enough energy that a frontal brain shot an african bull elephant will lift it off it's feet. The Heym Jumbo that Euro Gun Imports sold to a guy in the Woodlands.

Ok it’s been a long time ago since that come out in Field and Stream. Thought they shot elephants with it.
Well, I have seen stopping rifles in 4-bore.

While stopping rifles in 2-bore exist, I don't think they've ever been used for hunting. Note that the one shown in this video was commissioned as an exhibition piece, not a working rifle.

The most powerful thing I've ever shot was a 458 Win Mag in an absolutely beautiful (custom?) Remington 700. You couldn't wipe the grin off may face after I let that big ol bullet fly.

The most powerful thing I own is a Husqvarna in 9.3x57 Mauser. Not an Elephant gun by any stretch, but still a thumper. It's also not so powerful as to be overkill for most North American game.

The barrel band swivel on that rifle is classic big bore rifle. The 9.3x57 Mauser is a classic tapered case also associated with big bore dangerous game rifles. Ease in extraction is what it's all about when TSHTF.

You need to attend a SCI convention!
I was at the old Hill Country Rifle Range off Hamilton Pool Road ( the one owned by “Crazy Richard”) when I heard a souls shaking clap of thunder.

I went to see who the bringer of this thunder was and there was a middle aged man shooting a Holland and Holland .600 NE double rifle.

We got to talking and he said he was a mostly retired surgeon who hunted Africa every other year for big game and hunted birds in South America on the alternate years.

He offered to let me shoot it.

I, of course, said yes. I believe ammo was in the $30 per round at this time and offered to pay him, but like most gun folks he refused.

He asked if I wanted a “plinking”round or an elephant stopper.

You know which direction I went:)

I lined up the sights on a target at 50 yards ( standing of course)and let the shot be a surprise.
It was most definitely a surprise.

He asked if I was ok and said I did not have to shoot the other one if it was too stout.

I, of course, lined up the sights and let the second shot be a surprise as well and put the second shot within a half inch of the first.

I fell in love with monster bore double rifles at that point.

I do not own one, but if I ever find myself with an extra $150,000 burning a hole in my pocket I will fly to England and have a .600 custom fitted for me.

My buddy still has his Kreighoff .500 NE. I had tried several times into talking him into selling to pay for a M16 instead. Now that I'm no longer working my .416 would be one of my fist guns to want to sell. He still thinks there is a chance that he will return to Africa for one more hunt. Myself I doubt I would ever do it again.
