I've got one that was passed down to me by my FIL when he passed. I've shot it once, it's been in the safe since.

As far as newer Marlin vs newer Winchester I wish I could have more advice. The one I have shoots good & the lever is smooth. I'm pretty sure it's late 70's - early 80's model

Purdy. Some thoughts of newer Marlin stuff aint as good as it once was. I have a 70's era 336, and its been very reliable and accurate. I;ve killed all sorts of stuff with it. That is a cool gun, love the wood.

If your lever action guy, it is a fine weapon. The combination of room underneath for cycling the action, and the choice of flat nosed ammo has kept me away.
On the other hand, who did not like Chuck Connors as “The Rifleman “?

I have some 125g flat HPs I load for mine. That round is devastating. Last hog I shot it almost blew the backside shoulder completely off.

Likely would not shoot them past 150yds though.

Read my comments in the other topic from yesterday.

A CURRENT Remlin is better than the last few years (near decade) of the JM Marlins. If you like the color of the wood, you can do that to an older one...especially if you're going to get it CCH'd. Find a 50-70's Marlin in rough visual shape for less, CCH the receiver, cerakote the rest, refinish the wood.

A Remlin will never be a collector's item so hack away.

    Good thought.
