Wood buttstock protection vs leather shell holder

What preventative measure is recommended to protect a wood stock from the possibility of becoming discolored or otherwise degraded due to a leather shell holder?

A layer of some other material wrapped between?

Couldn't you just remove it when not in use?

OK, but the one I 'use' is always on the rifle and always fully loaded for quick grab. just saying.

I have a Winchester 94 with a badly discolored buttstock from one of those leather cartridge holders. It happened while in the care of a previous owner - my son.

Couldn't you just remove it when not in use?

I could but I would hope not to have to, because like @wakosama said but also because I would want to tuck the lacings and it would be a PITA to do that frequently.

If the shell holder is likely to be on it for the life of the rifle (or at least your life)… why worry if it discolors the stock?
