Speaking of opportunities to work around live music, in 1978 or so Pace offered my sister the position of Concert Coordinator for all their shows in and around Houston. The pay was a tad low and she had another job offer so she didn't take it.

When she told me the offer, I hit the ceiling. She didn't realize the value of the total package they offered which included 10 first row tickets and essentially as many backstage passes as she could use to every single concert.

Talk about a missed opportunity! She didn't know what to do with the tickets and she was unsure of herself when it came to fulfilling any special requests made by the talent. She could have subcontracted all that work to me.

I don't know if I'm more pissed off because she missed the opportunity or because I didn't get to glom onto her and live that life along with her.

    Probably the latter. :(
Can we assume that you disowned her.....

    Texarkana - Across The Border
I was 11 when my father took us to see Elvis at the Astrodome, during the annual Houston Livestock & Rodeo. That was in 1974, just months before my grandfather passed away. It wasn't just a few weeks after that show, that we moved from Houston to Palestine. Then my grandfather passed away that December, shortly before Christmas.

Yeah, I do remember 1974 pretty vividly.
Holy horse feathers, turns out you are younger than me.

Too many to list, but some memorable ones:
Bruce Springsteen - April 1976, Tickets were $2. My girlfriend stood me up. Another girl I knew ran into me at the concert and we had a good enough time that she bought pizza. Still ranks as the best concert I ever went to.

Boston - one of the last concerts with open seating (after the tragic deaths in Cincinnati I think the same year). Was nearly crushed waiting to get in. No joke, a crowd of people pushing can literally crush the air out of your lungs. Rick Derringer was the opener and he was much better than Boston.

Beach Boys - Brian Wilson freaked out when some chick hopped up on the stage and tried to kiss him. We didn't know at the time that he had severe mental problems, but if you'd seen the way he reacted, you'd be shocked. Overall, the concert sucked.

Yes - Worst. Concert. Ever. They played like 2 songs. For an hour and a half. Had to wake up half the audience to go home.

Jerry Jeff Walker (RIP) and The Allman Brothers - Fun night. Bought a "Disco Sucks" bumper sticker and put it on my old Duster.

Willie Nelson New Year's Eve Concert - in the Summit. I don't know how long it lasted - we left around 2. So many bands and so many people coming out and doing songs. Earl Campbell sang on something. Leon Russell, Bonnie Raitt (her father came on and sang "Oklahoma"), and many more. Supposedly the party backstage was far wilder than than you might imagine.

Pat Green - Special mention, Houston Rodeo. Someone gave me tickets. The college kids sitting around us were all doing Ecstacy and getting wasted. First, a couple of them passed out, including one that fell on my wife. Then they all started throwing up. The first one did it in his brother's cowboy hat. After that, it was hit or miss. I have never had any lengthy tolerance for bad drunks, so we bolted before the concert was over.

Molly Hatchet - Strangest Concert EVER. At an old rock venue in Houston. The front half of the place was theater seats and in the back were picnic tables. The big, steel exit doors were on the side in between the seating areas. They had at least 20 huge bouncers. For some weird reason, fights started breaking out. The bouncers would beat those involved and then throw them out the door like in those old westerns, where 2 bouncers would toss a guy head first. Sometimes they used his head to open the door. The lead singer stopped the show a couple of times and begged people to cool it. Then a cop walked in, strutted up to the stage, talked to the lead singer, and the concert was stopped temporarily because someone was stabbed outside and the ambulance needed the electric power. We took that as a hint to leave.

Billy Joel - my wife was the girl who stood me up for Springsteen. (Yes, you are correct. I should have learned from that, but I was young and stupid.) She had a chance to go see Joel at a small venue in the branch campus she was attending. He ran into her in the hall and tried to talk her into going. Tickets were 75 cents. She didn't go. (This was between "Piano Man" and when he became huge and married a supermodel, etc.) He becomes huge, tickets are $75, and she insists on going. Good concert, terrible seats.

Hootie and the Blowfish - probably one of the best cover bands ever. These guys toured everywhere before they made it big and they can literally play anything.

Matchbox 20, ZZ Top, Foreigner, Chuck Berry (he was old, but I was at the stage and he was rockin'!), Doobie Brothers, more.

People I wish I'd seen but didn't: SRV

I will throw some of the most memorable shows out.
Sex Pistols. I was 11, not 10. This was in Atlanta.
John Lee Hooker( x2) once at a private show in Chicago and at Fun,Fun,Fun Fest in Austin.
Dizzy Gillespie - Mayport Jazz Festival

Tony Bennett- SXSW show at Austin Music Hall. packed house. Peter Wolf ( J Geils Band) was the head liner that night. Having to follow Tony Bennett, well, the house went from packed to 13 people for Wolf. To his absolute credit, they did their full set and spent time bullshitting with the folks who stayed and had a great attitude.

    Johnny Cash.

Rolling Stones ( was a rigger on the Voodoo Lounge Tour in ‘94)

    Patti Smith

Ray Manzarek - Hell of a nice guy. Looks like the smallest guy on all of the Doors album covers, but in reality, he was a pretty big guy. I was surprised.

Can't remember all of them, but the most memorable was when I went on the inaugural Bud Light Party Cruise. Went to the Bahamas and then to Coco Cay beach (private island). The three bands were O.A.R., Bare Naked Ladies and All American Rejects.

I have a most unmemorable concert. California Jam in 1973, at the now defunct Ontario Speedway. Three days and 9 bands headlined by Black Sabbath and ELP. I was dry, dirty and stoned for most of the three days.
