I stand corrected on the new brass. I loaded up the new Nosler brass yesterday with some Hornady 140 ELD Match (6.5 creedmoor) and my first 5 shot group measured .372” edge to edge, a .108” group. Best ive ever shot I think.

Closest I got today will be the hour of measuring and coming up with tweaks to the future reamer order that is all wildcat based so reloading is a must.

Savage Axis II Precision. Basically a cheap Savage Axis in an MDT oryx type chasis. It shoots MOA or better with almost everything I feed it. With my hand-loads, it’s incredible. I love to tell the story about a range trip, where the guy shooting next to me made the remark “Couldn’t you find anything smaller?” about the fact that I was putting 1” target stickers on my target. I smiled and didn’t say anything. He then got behind his spotting scope, I guess to see if I could hit them. After I shot a group that may have been 1/4” or so, he said, “I guess if I had that much money to spend on a gun, I could shoot like that too!” It brought me great joy to tell him I was shooting a Savage Axis!

I do something similar with my Axis II. Between the action and the accutrigger, that combo is one of the best values out there.

I also use pasters for the 3” shoot n c targets for my CZ455 in 17HMR.

Finally ordered an auto measure (RCBS Chargemaster Link). Been using a cheap Frankford Arsenal pocket scale I got off Amazon the day I bought my press. Gonna be a lot easier, faster, and I’m guessing more consistent charges! Even ordered some more new brass. Lapua 6mm creedmoor. The last range trip with the Nosler brass made me a believer in good brass!

    Rick,
Have you compared the 4198 to 5744? Just wondering if I should try some 4198.
Also, what bullet are you using a d what kind of velocity are you seeing?
    Thanks.

I am shooting a Springfield 1866 Rollingblock. I have been looking for some AA5744. Lots of good info in it. Good speed with very low pressure. So far no one in my area has it in stock, with no idea when they will see it again. If or when it shows up I will be testing it.
IMR4198 is listed in the 1965 Cartridges of the World book as a factory duplication load. On the Springfield Trap Door site the old guys all swear by it and 5744. I am using 25gr 4198 with an Arsenal Mold 310gr, hard lead cast at .512. The average velocity is 1410.

I warmed up the lead pot and cast my Lee 158gr .357 mold for the first time. This was one of those golden days, where you find a groove and all the casts come out good, once I got the mold at the right temp... I ended up with maybe 200-300... didn't count them yet, just guessing.... but it was one of the better casting days I've had in a while.... I also cast a few with my new Lyman .429 mold, just to see how it works. I still haven't found the rhythm for it yet, and only saved about 40-50... but it will be good for some test loads for the Rossi lever gun....
    A pic of the .357's...

    Rick,
Thanks! I still have several pounds of 5744.
I have had very good results so far... I use it in my trapdoor rifles, my high walls and Sharps rifles. My #1 rolling block and original 1865 trapdoor I use BP, soft lead (10 bn scale) cast hollow base 400 gr. bullet with great results. Mostly because I already load BP, also because I would hate to damage original old rifles.

1400 fps is pretty good speed for cast bullets (in my opinion) Definitely would shut up those who think "old" rifles couldn't perform.
I have yet to use the chronograph on my 50-140, but figure that the 50gr. of 5744 pushes a 515gr. cast bullet out at around 1600-1800 fps.
I do know that will rock my ar500 plate target at 100 yds while the .308 hardly moves it at all.
