    Gunz are icky.

    38/44 Heavy Duty

    Smith & Wesson .38/44 - Wikipedia

IMO, it has definitely been refinished.
Grips appears to be Jay Scott.
Doesn't matter tho. It's family. Keep and enjoy.
I'd be shootin' the beejabbers out of it with moderate .38's.

This is what it looked like originally.
Thanks for showing it to us.

He told me he paid $35. He bought it when he joined the Waco Police Dept in 1957. Originally came with stag grips (I have them) and he switched to the pearl grips when he made chief. He carried it until he made detective (homicide/robbery/crime scene), at which time he carried a Colt snub nose 38 (my sis has it).

Then carried the SW when he transitioned again. At one time he was the only licensed polygraph examiner in McLennan County. Was a cop for 36 years.

That model was popular with LEO's of the day.
The .357's were quite expensive at the time.
A working cop didn't usually have that kind of $.
Same reason for the Model 28 vs. the Model 27.
The 27 was THE premier revolver of S&W. Very $$$
The 28 was the same gun just not finished out as well. So it was less expensive and it too was very popular with LEO's of the time.
Somewhere I read a story about a policeman needing to purchase a revolver around 1962 or so.
    A standard Model 10 was about $50. The M27 was about $170.
When you made $90 a month the choice was easy.

This is one of my favorites. 8 3/8" 27-2 from my dad's estate. The insert in the display case is long gone, waiting for my sister to dig through his boxes of grips to find the originals. One of my favorite shooting revolvers.

My current favorite semi auto is a Nowlin Challenger in 9mm. It is accurate and smooth, with an incredible trigger.

Some Korth is always my favorite revolver, they are in a separate safe :).

    You have won much
    Much appreciate it.

I was at the 2002 End of Trail in Norco, CA. There were a couple of raffles for cars, etc. I didn’t even look at those. However, that Custom Colt looked so sweet that me and the gf both filled out tickets. I actually relocated in the months after and SASS wasn’t able to contact me. They eventually did through my local gun shop (be good to your local FFLs, folks).
