Your local Navy recruiter should know the answer to watch or no watch.

He will like the computerized shooting classes. The "guns" even have recoil.

I would absolutely wait until he is out of boot camp. Actually, they have 'bells' to tell time so watch is not needed. And they get in the way of the ropes to pull up the sails.

Would've waited til after boot and seen if he wanted a work watch or libo watch. for work in your price range i would have gone with a suunto gps. allows for heartrate monitoring and other uses for working out. more useful than just a watch that only tells time really. for libo, thats a whole other discussion.

    167 On the road!
When I was in Navy boot camp in the 60's you could not have worn a watch or any other jewelry. If you showed up with that stuff, it would be packaged up and sent back home with your new electric razor, portable radio and anything else that you brought with you. You were not going to need that electric razor, they gave you all you were going to need to shave or any other "personal" items you were going to need.

Got a cake in the mail in boot camp ? Must have been a different boot camp than I went to.
You would have had to have been there. MCRD in 1966 was alot about pain and punishment, not like squid bootcamp.

We always liked when the MC boots got out and made it to he EM club the first night. 4 or 5 of them always thought they could take on the entire place and usually ended up regretting it. They always could convince those guys they were tough, and they had to be retrained.

You know I saw the thread title, my mind went the totally deranged way and was picturing a "woman of the evening" standing on a street corner near a naval station.

Sailors are curious creatures. In 1967 aboard the Tripoli the captain had to issue an order barring sailors not involved in medi-evac operations from the flight deck because there were so many gawkers it was impossible to get wounded Marines to sick bay. I think I have a copy in my files. I'll look.
