Apparently, he was a fast gun slinger.
Cool pics. I visited that site about 10 years ago too.

He was shot in the back on the corner of Mesa and San Antoino:

The square plack in the midde of the photo marks the building where he was shot in the back of the head.
The building was the original Acme Saloon.
    Top floor was a brothel.

Such a shame to see that location selling cheap clothes and Chinese fodder.
If only these walls could talk.

    er,

I'll bet there's a fan base for every one of these killers from Gacy/Manson to the cannibal Dahmer.

What some people find admirable is a totally sick mystery to me.

After reading this thread, I did a bit of research on JWH.

Psycho, in a long series on murderous psychos...why he's celebrated is a wonder to me.

Back in the 1800s notoriety and fame were pretty interchangeable. Once a name was known, mythology was built around it. Consider that Wyatt Earp wasn't a lot better than Hardin, he just managed to wear a badge for his most famous exploits. Frank and Jesse James were seen as heroes by a lot of people. Billy the Kid was a savage little psychopath but he's been romanticized into some kind of folk hero.

Meanwhile guys like Bass Reeves and John Coffee Hays are nearly forgotten.

Has anybody seen the Highway Men movie?..

    Same thing.
Both Bonnie and Clyde were complete psychopaths, but they were loved by many.
    So was Pablo Escobar.

The Highway Men movie was glorifying the Texas Rangers that took down Bonnie and Clyde, not the killers themselves.

Yea. Remember in the movie at the end how the people were all clamoring to touch them and steal their clothes, etc.?
The people in the town they were in at the time protected and hid them. The "fans" would try to throw off the Rangers at every turn.

Same thing. JWH was a killer, and beloved by many in the West.

None of which I would eulogize with monuments. Just like I didn't really care to learn about the killer in Uvalde. They should be dead and forgotten.
