Yep, have another one. Started going thru the ammo box and came across ~600 rounds of 7.62x39. Surely Dad didn't pick up an AK-47 and neglect to tell anyone, right? Opened up the safe, pulled everything out, and in the back found a SKS. Mmmmk, he didn't bring home a secret AK, just a secret SKS  But, again, no branding that I can see, serial and such are partially hidden by the stock, and I have zero to little knowledge of SKS's. Any help identifying this guy would be incredible :D

Looks like a Chinese Norinco SKS in an ATI Strikeforce stock and a Tapco gas tube.

Is the original stock around by chance?

Someone else can possibly give you a better idea on value but I know SKS collectors tend to not like the aftermarket stocks. I'd hazard a guess that you could get $400 for it.

Thank you! I've at least got a starting point to search now. I haven't found any random stocks laying around..... yet. For $400, I'll keep it and have fun :D

@majormadmax can probably give a more accurate gauge on price.

SKS rifles are fun though so you can't go wrong keeping it either. I'd probably try to bring it back to its original configuration myself.

Just noticed it doesn't have a magazine. Did you find any kicking around? They originally came with a fixed magazine which is generally much more reliable than the aftermarket duckbill detachable mags.

Norinco did also make a model that took AK magazines but this doesn't appear to be one of them based on how the magazine release looks.

@SQLGeek is spot on, it's a commercial Chinese Norinco and in that configuration (commonly referred to as "Bubba'd") it might fetch $400. They are much more desirable in their original state.

It should have a duckbill magazine that looks something like this...

The SKS that take AK magazines are the SKS-D and SKS-M models. Unfortunately, yours is neither of those.

The Simonov is a great rifle that was overshadowed by the AK-47 that came out a few years later. Still, they saw a lot of service and are fun shooters!

Yep, only Albanian, Romanian and Russian SKS in original configurations are C&R eligible...

As I stated, that is a Chinese commercial rifle.

I believe you may want to rethink what you said about SKS rifles, only from the three countries you mentioned, as being C&R eligible.

    Curios & Relics

A regulation implementing federal firearms laws, 27 CFR §478.11, defines Curio or Relic (C&R) firearms as those which are of special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons.

To be recognized as C&R items, 478.11 specifies that firearms must fall within one of the following categories:

    1. Firearms which were manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas of such firearms;

    2. Firearms which are certified by the curator of a municipal, state, or federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; and

    3. Any other firearms which derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or because of their association with some historical figure, period, or event.
Firearms automatically attain C&R status when they are 50 years old. Any firearm that is at least 50 years old, and in its original configuration, would qualify as a C&R firearm. It is not necessary for such firearms to be listed in ATF's C&R list. Therefore, ATF does not generally list firearms in the C&R publication by virtue of their age. However, if you wish for a classification of your particular firearm under categories 1 or 2 above and wish your item to be listed, you may submit the weapon to the Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division (FATD) for a formal classification.

Please note that firearms regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA) may be classified as C&R items, but still may be subject to the provisions of the NFA. If your C&R item is an NFA firearm (e.g., Winchester Trappers) and you desire removal from the NFA status, you must submit it to FATD for evaluation and a formal classification.

The above quote is an exact quote from the ATF website, boldface type is ATF's - not added by me; source.

Thus, barring any specific exclusion, any SKS that is 50 years old or older, and is in its original configuration, is considered a C&R.

I was going to comment on that but I think he was referring to specifically allowed regardless of age. There are some imported Type 56s from China that qualify based on age as well.
