I recently paid too much and bought my "holy grail" of S&W revolvers. A nice (no longer in collectable condition) S&W Md 544 in .44-40, better known as the Texas Wagon Train revolver. It's a sweet 5" N-frame square butt. I had an old box of .44-40 cowboy loads I bought a while back (made in 1997 according to the box).

It has a Performance Center action job and is about the nicest double action shooter in my stable. That is next to a 4 screw Md 14 that also had an action job by an unknown 'smith before I bought it.

Now, if companies will start making .44-40 at a reasonable price again I might be able to take it out again.

    Good shooting!

    BTW, I’m pretty sure that’s 1987, not 1997.

IIRC, they were produced for the Texas sesquicentennial, which was 1986 (wow, just over 14 to the bicentennial!)

    I’m old!

It was made in 1987. My mistake. I've got about 200 rounds of "cowboy action loads" and that's all I'm really wanting to shoot in it. MidwayUSA has these type of .44-40 loads in bound but the prices are way too steep. I'll wait. I have plenty of .38 spl reloads for my Md 19 to keep me busy.

    Thanks everyone for your comments!

Saw the title and thought you took it to a retirement home! It’s a beautiful piece, and because it’s a wheel gun, even the better!
