    What round for axis deer?

I use 30/06 to make sure they drop where they stand. I have seen one hit with a 270 and run down into a valley and was extremely difficult to recover. When we strung it up and opened it, the bullet struck the heart but not enough to drop him. If you go for neck or head then maybe I would use a 270. I'm not any sort of expert so I'm sure others will use different, I just know what works for me.

30.06 is a good round but so it the 270.

There are many factory that affect performance. Besides shot placement, bullet construction and velocity play big parts.

I suspect the 270 shot suffered failure because of those.

But wherever your confidence lies is the best round for you.

Yeah, we get a lot of offers to "HELP" us with our "PROBLEM", lol. They are all free range also, we don't have and I won't ever have a high fence.
My uncle has tons of Axis deer too and no tall fences.

The neighbor behind his place (many years ago) had game fences on three sides and a river separating his and my uncle's places.

A bad drought allowed the Axis deer to just walk out.

The neighbor has since added the fence to the fourth side. Lesson learned I guess.

I've used 30-06 on all the ones I've killed. Least gamey venison on earth.
