Well, if you don't ask anything, what other effort are you talking about?

You can use what the law says and your morals to guide you.

    Some other things would be

is his car from out of state
looks like they are 8 years old
is wearing a wristband from a mental ward
he asks his friend will this gun work to kill my ex

lots of clues to tip you off, And I assume could be used to show you should have known they were prohibited.

I am not saying you would be convicted of anything but I bet if the gun you sold them was used in a murder you might get a good looking over and if you had 35 bills of oh never mind.

    google is your friend.

Obvious signs are obvious, what if they don't display any of these signs?

I just want to know how one can legally sell someone a firearm without first having some kind discussion with them?

I didn't think it would be possible.

The good old gun show loophole.

Them: “Hey buddy, would you take $350 cash for that gun?”

    Me: Yep

Done deals on the floor just like that being on both sides.

Remember, an unlicensed individual may transfer a firearm to another unlicensed individual residing in the same State, provided that he or she has no reason to believe the buyer is prohibited by law from possessing firearms.

    AND

Under Federal law, there is no recordkeeping requirement pertaining to the transfer of a firearm between two unlicensed individuals.

So, it that off chance I’ve been accused of having a reason to believe the buyer is prohibited or not a resident, I can just say: prove it.

I haven’t sold a firearm in decades, but I’ve bought enough. The most I’ve ever had to do for a private transfer is say “I’m a LTC holder”. I’ve never even been asked to show it.

If I were to sell, I’d ask to see a TX LTC or reciprocal LTC with a TX address and that’s it.

I've never sold a gun either.

I was evidently mistaken in the fact that some due diligence was required prior to the sale.

Yep, meet in a public place with good visibility. Be aware of what is going on around you. Carry.
My local police department has a camera monitored place that is for Craiglist and other person to be person deals but they will not allow gun sales. I need to ask the chief why legal gun sales can't be done there but a toaster sale is legal. On the other hand, do I want the cops watching me, maybe not.
