That shouldn't happen to a Carcano. They're generally well made guns and have pretty good steel in them. Their design does however make them kind of clunky to use. They're not the smoothest guns, and the enbloc clips can be a PITA to deal with.

There were some that were modified (drilled) overseas so that they would be "inoperable" though. Often, this was done in a way that you could not see without disassembling the gun, and it would still be possible to load and fire a round. It's possible one of those made it into a batch that was imported. It's also possible that the ammo manufacturer screwed up and sent out a round that would make bubba's pissin hot reloads look mild. The shooter just won the bad luck and good luck lotteries simultaneously.

If you shoot/collect old guns, check them out BEFORE firing.

Yeah. My experience with steinel wasn't exactly stellar, but... Damn.

This is what i consider to be a "looney tunes kaboom", something so destructive it's almost comical.

Here is a review from Steinel’s web page.

I truly belive your Carcano 6.5 is loaded to hot...at least the ammo I recieved.
The Steinel ammo locked up the action and I had to force open the bolt with a rubber hammer. Norma 6.5 ammo-no issues. Hornady 6.5 ammo-no issues. No longer produced. PPU 6.5 ammo-no issues. I also slugged the barrel and the diameter was good. Please reach out if you would like additional information about my experience.

    No surprised.

When i had a carcano, steinel was the only place that had any trace of availability, nothing in stock, but i put in for a backorder of 3 boxes.

Like a month goes by, and i get an email saying that the load they were working on didn't shoot well out of the carbines that were flooding in. They said they had a load that shot well, and if i didn't reply to the email, they'd send the carbine load. If i replied, they'd send the rifle load.

    I had a carbine, so i didn't reply.

Like 2 more months go by, and i get my ammo, only to discover it was not the carbine specific load, instead it was the 130ish gr spitzer bullets. It shot incredibly poorly, like 8" ar 25 yards.

I got offered a good deal for it, so i never followed up. I have some of the cases still, i might beed to check them for pressure signs

I read an article years ago on the development of the 6.5 Carcano round. As I recall the round was developed to fight who the Italians thought would be their next foes. It was supposed to penetrate winter clothing and the person wearing those clothes. They thought their was would be a mountain war against the Germans. This was 1891 era thinking.

Was mostly driven by a humiliating defeat in Ethiopia, where the Italians were attacked by a much larger force, and were defeated after running out of ammo.

So fast loading, small size, low recoil... Pretty forward thinking
