Anyone know of a list of schools where someone can learn the gunsmith trade (national list)? My son is considering various careers and that is one of them. Not much on the internet.

    Help appreciated

Tagged until I can dig up a couple cards
Any help is appreciated. I even called a local gunsmith guy thinking he would know for sure and he had no idea. Wonder where the current older generation learned it?

Thanks for the list. Spent over an hour searching Google and didn't come up with this. Checked every listing on it. Surprised there are not more schools that offer this, especially with the surge in gun sales. I would think it would be in demand with young people. Anyone comes up with any school not on the list please post. We are moving to Florida so anything there would be great but going to check out the other states too as possibilities. Not sure if an internet course would work? Would think hands-on instruction would be a must for something like this.

    Welcome!!

Not that I am deep into custom Marlins, but I am surprised I have never heard of Ranger Point. What's the history of the company?

    Thanks,
    Pete

Hi Pete - Thanks for the Welcome! We started RPP officially last March after years training with others. Before gunsmithing, my partner and I were master motorcycle mechanics for 15 years. We love lever actions, so we started with Marlin and have developed custom-builds, parts, conversions, etc. We also specialize in and service other firearm models from grip and trigger mods, to action and accuracy, to custom paint and camo designs: Savage and BRNO Bolt Action Rifles; CZ 452 and 455; AR-15; AK-47, Saiga, Steyr Pistols, Springfield XD-Series, 1911 and Glocks. If you find yourself out in Cypress, stop by and see us some time. We specialize in and service the following firearm models: Marlin Lever Action Rifles; Savage Bolt Action Rifles; CZ 452 and 455; BRNO Bolt Action Rifles; AR-15 Rifles (all variants); AK-47 and Saiga Rifles (all variants); Steyr Pistols; Springfield XD-Series Pistols; 1911 Pistols; Glock Pistols.

Was any of that training under any Conventional Pistol specialists? If I asked for a proper roll trigger on a 1911, would you be able to say you've done them before and know how to do one for me?

Please understand, I don't mean to sound rude. But as far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a 'smith in Texas that will do anything other than stare blankly at me when I ask or, worse, try to convince me that I don't know what I'm asking for and that triggers aren't meant to work that way.

Ben have you called and talked to John Dixon? He is my go to guy on 1911s and might be able to help.

What you are asking for is a trigger that has what some would call 'creep' but without the grittiness associated with 'normal' creep on a trigger, a smooth progression to the break, right???

Yes, a long, smooth progression to sear release with no immediate stop afterwards is a "roll trigger". You just keep the trigger moving and the firearm fires somewhere (consistently, of course) along the way.

I see your contact info for Mr. Dixon up-thread. I'll call him when I get a pistol in hand. I've just about given up on the custom pistol I ordered a while back from a "name" smith; 2.5 years is too long to wait.

No offense taken at all. I won't try to convince you that triggers shouldn't feel that way. The work I do on my favorite personal pistols (Steyrs and XDs) yields similar results. Short, but smooth and predictable sear movement before release.

That said, I also won't try to convince you that I'm an old hand at making 1911s work that way. While we do a fair amount of 1911 work, you're the first to ask about doing a roll trigger, so we've never done it. While I feel sure we could accomplish it, I can also understand anyone who prefers to bring their favorite firearm to a specialist. When my partner and I started this business, we agreed that there were more than enough specialists (self proclaimed or tried and true) working on 1911s and Remington 700s, so neither has been our area of focus.

We prefer to identify quality attributes in firearms that don't inhabit such crowded marketplaces. It keeps things fresh and interesting for us. When we find something that really impresses us, we go to great lengths to deepen our understanding of that particular firearm, so that we can offer parts and services that would otherwise be unavailable.

Another important aspect of the gunsmithing business that my partner and I identified before opening our doors was customer service and turnaround time. The industry seemed sorely lacking in this regard, and judging by at least a few of the comments in this thread, we aren't the only ones who feel this way. While plenty of gunsmiths take pride in the quality of their work (and believe me, that is paramount to us as well) many either don't have the time, the staff, or the inclination to provide timely turnaround and memorable customer service.

We are a young company, but we've experienced a lot of success, and it's because of those three critical ingredients: quality, customer service, and quick turnaround. But don't take my word for it. Check out the reviews on our website or on Marlin Owners Forum. They'll tell you who we are in a nutshell.

Thanks for the opportunity to introduce ourselves. Happy hunting.

    Adam

    Gunz are icky.
Do you slick up and short stroke 1866/73 Winchester clones for CAS?
    What about 1897 shotguns?
    Revolver timing?

We do action work on all lever guns, though we haven't been approached by many CAS folks yet. We've not attempted a short stroke on the Winnie clones because we haven't been asked. We did recently start offering short stroke/caliber conversions for the Marlin 1894.

We can also correct revolver timing, as well as trigger/action tuning.

Need to have the bbl on my PTR91 threaded and install a flash suppressor. anyone in the Hill Country that can do it? I really don't want to have to send it down to Arizona Response but it's kinda looking like I'll have to.
