Butter does not require refrigeration to keep for a few weeks.

We took a hint from the French and bought several covered butter dishes, keep a couple sticks of butter ready in kitchen cabinet; they’re always soft & ready.

I had never realized that, until I was told, and tried it for myself.

Some time ago...outside of Philly...one of these went in excess of 130mph.

    Also? With a sidecar fitted & a passenger.........managed 108mph!

There was no other production motorcycle capable of so doing...

Decades ago, I had an older neighbor who did some flat track racing in his younger days on an Indian.

He loved telling the stories....and all the reasons Indians were better than HD.

    Great guy.

The Indian Scout (45") is still the thing in hill climbing...

At the White Rose Motorcycle Club (where the Indian Rally is held)....The Fuel Bikes, the more modern bikes...all make a great noise...

Old flat head Scout...just chugs on up the hill...

    I ran a '48 Chief for 20 yrs...

I understand? That it is easier to get parts now (Kiwi is re popping a lot)...than it was then...

    Just? Costs more....(like everything else)....

I painted it the same color scheme as this '38..

If you notice? The machine pictured is a magneto model...

Mine? Had the distributor vertically mounted off the oil pump...

The magneto is mounted transversely in front of the front cylinder....

Will tell you for fact, JACK! A bit of drizzle? With the magneto? The spark plug on the rear cylinder will JOLT the living stars out of the back of yer right thigh...The distributor model is not near so bad...It will hit you...just not like the mag!

Growing up, mom always kept the butter in a covered dish on the counter top.

Did yours have the "hand shifter"?
    Yes.

Left hand throttle. Right hand spark advance. (one retards the timing for cold start, and engine braking down long hills)

    Right hand shift.

Left foot clutch. Clutch on Indian is "Heel to Go". On a Harley they were "Toe to Go". Not what it seems...the clutch one could start it slipping, and put one's foot down...as long as you feed it throttle? It will take about a block & a half to vibrate all the way engaged....

Slow races, plank rides, tire toss...all the classic "field events" are a blast on a period machine. (never won anything, but had a great time)

The throttle & spark advance do not "return"...Want this much throttle? Twist the wick..that is where it stays. Want to let off? Simply roll the grip forward..

Drum brakes front & rear. Mechanical. Drum brakes are "cammed"....they stop better going forward, than back...try holding it on a hill in Pittsburgh at the traffic light...
