Had the Marlin 336 SS for a number of years and never really shot it much.
Got it with 3 boxes of Hornady 160 gr FTX Leverevolution and it has never really been very accurate with that ammunition and I have never perused it any further.
Always been a 3–4 MOA on any given day with the 160 FTX.
Late last year I decided to upgrade the 4x scope and pursue brass, bullets and start load development and get this out of the safe and start using it if it’s usable for my wants.
First got momma and kiddos on board for new scope, mount and rings for Christmas.
I sourced brass, some 150 and 170 Sierra FN Pro Hunters and some 160 Hornady FTX Bullets.
Want to try and use powder on hand and in quantity, Varget, 4064, 748 and see what I can do with that before purchasing additional powder.
About a week ago went out and shot 5 round groups with each bullet and each powder at mid-range suggested load to see where I stood.
The results.
My desire would be for the Varget to work out. I have a lot of it and its temperature stable. The 170 looks promising.
Went out yesterday did a 5 shot group of 4064 of all three bullets in .5 grain increments .
The results.
The 150 @ 32.0 blew me away. Center to center .875”.
Didnt give the 30-30 any credibility for being capable of sub MOA.
Now if I can get the Varget to do that or even close I’ll be ecstatic.
Continued late next week when it warms back up some.
Huntin critters in the cold is fun.
Shootin paper not so much.
