I'm curious too. From what little I know, I belive the first step is to get a tax stamp. And I gather that one may even want to precede that step with setting up a legal trust.

I found the info at this site interesting:

NFA Tax Stamp

All silencers, or other NFA items, require a 'Tax Stamp'. This tax is paid by the transferor at the time they submit the Form 4 NFA transfer application to ATF. At Silencer Shop, we make the process easier by simply selling the tax stamp on our website -

I ordered through silencershop in Austin, and using A&P as my FFL. They will handle the trust, stamp, and filing for you. It’s a breeze.

A&P and Saddle River have the kiosks for fingerprints - you can do the rest at home online.
