I think it’s “bear”. I seem to remember a story about someone signing an official document with a big ‘X’ in the middle of “Bear”. So the name stuck. Not sure of the validity of said story.

    It's pronounced "stɑ lɪnˌgræd".

But seriously, it's "bear". The x is silent.

It is more correct per Spanish pronunciation to say Bay-har (same as saying Oaxaca) but that's not now it's pronounced here.

Texas pronunciations are quite unlike anywhere else.

Bexar County (San Antonio) is pronounced “bear”.

The county was named for San Antonio de Béxar, one of the 23 Mexican municipalities (administrative divisions) of Texas at the time of its independence. San Antonio de Béxar—originally Villa de San Fernando de Béxar—was the first civil government established by the Spanish in the province of Texas.”

I still crack up when the mapping programs try to say stuff like Kuykendahl, and it comes "cuh-KEN-dal". Or Telge turns into "TEL-juh" or just "TELj".

Then there's the ever lasting debate of whether it's San Fuh-LEE-pay or San Filuh-PEE.

    Umble for Humble bothers me.

Filuh-pee is too ridiculous for me to acknowledge ;)
