Snakes early this year...

Just killed my first copperhead on the front porch. That’s at least a month earlier than they usually come out, here in north Texas. Not full grown but well past the tail flash age.

I already killed two small copperheads, and one water moccasin this week. One of the puppies got bit a few days ago on the leg.

I think the snakes are going to be bad this year.

I've been on the lookout. I've seen lots of toads, and that's usually an indication the snakes are not far behind. Last year I killed one that was 24 inches long.

Yeah, I think overall we’ve had a pretty mild Winter so it doesn’t surprise they’re out early this year. Most years average an early period of mid-April to more typically, end of April or first of May (again, speaking Baja Oklahoma Area).

Yep, copperhead - got those Hersey Kisses-shaped markings. That was about the size of the one I killed last year, on the back porch. (House backs up to a green belt area with a pond & creek).

Yeah, they love hiding (blending in) in the leaves on the ground! But this early, you may also just find them sunning themselves in the open.

(But then, the wife had me wash off the blood from the porch). I was thinking of just leaving the stain for the benefit of unwanted “solicitors”.

What I'm looking for is one of the freshly-shed moccasins that is big enough to make a hatband from. = All the ones that I've seen here in south TX don't have the nice pattern that our cottonmouths up in NETX often do.
(Must be a regional difference of some sort.)

Summer of 2018, I killed quite a few copperheads and water moccasins, 2019 didn't kill any.

My theory is the cats keep the rodents down which keeps the snakes down
