Shot an armadillo...

A couple of days ago we caught an armadillo digging up under our propane tank. Well, I shot it with a 9mm (147gr Gold Dot at around 950 FPS), and it took off like a bat out of hell. I was 100% sure I hit it, but I could never find any blood and I never found it despite looking for around an hour and then some more later in the day. I saw a very dark spot at about it's mid point as it was running off, and it looked a lot like a wound. I figured it was just a bad shot and it went off and died somewhere. I felt BAD about it, I don't want the thing to go off and suffer like that.

Well, fast forward to today and the damn thing was back digging under the propane tank. I grab the 9mm again, pop it at 30 yards, and quickly finish it off with another round.

I had not missed my shot the other day. It apparently glanced off the side and didn't do any serious damage to the thing. I know it's the same dillo because it has that same dark spot on it's back. I've heard about rounds ricocheting off these things, but it was always smaller, slow rounds. I didn't figure a 9mm defense load would do it.

I think next time, I'll use a bigger gun...

How close to the propane tank when you shot?

Far enough away that it was safe. I waited until it wondered away from the tank before I shot. I'd rather not find out what would happen if I accidentally hit the tank ..

A lot of propane goes into atmosphere. No hollywood boom, but best to be safe. I was just wondering.
